dUTPase is essential in zebrafish development and possesses several single‐nucleotide variants with pronounced structural and functional consequences

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
dUTPases are involved in balancing the appropriate nucleotide pools. We showed that dUTPase is essential for normal development in zebrafish. The different zebrafish genomes contain several single‐nucleotide variations (SNPs) of the dut gene. One of the dUTPase variants displayed drastically lower protein stability and catalytic efficiency as compared ...

Dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) regulates trophoblast syncytialization through organelle stress–induced cellular senescence

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The inhibition of mitochondrial dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) impairs syncytialization and induces cellular senescence via mitochondrial and endoplasmic reticulum stress in human trophoblast stem cells, elevating sFlt1/PlGF levels, a hallmark of placental dysfunction in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

A new modal-based damage location indicator [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Vibration-based damage detection techniques use the change in modal data as an indicator to assess damages in the structure. Knowing the structural dynamic characteristics of the healthy and damaged structure, the estimation of the damage location and ...

On Heavy-tailed Crack Distribution for Loss Severity Modeling

open access: yesInternational Journal of Statistics and Probability, 2017
Heavy-tailedness and right-skewness are two typical features of loss data resulting from catastrophic events such as storms or earthquakes. In this paper we study the tail properties of the generalized crack distribution which has recently been introduced as an extension of the Birnbaum-Saunders distribution and the three-parameter Gaussian crack ...

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Sex-based differences in multidimensional clinical assessments of early-abstinence crack cocaine users.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
Crack cocaine use disorder (CUD) has been related to sex differences. This work aimed to compare the severity of drug use and the severity of other negative related outcomes in males and females with CUD.

Multiple Cracks Detection in Pipeline Using Damage Index Matrix Based on Piezoceramic Transducer-Enabled Stress Wave Propagation

open access: yesSensors, 2017
Cracks in oil and gas pipelines cause leakage which results in property damage, environmental pollution, and even personal injury or loss of lives. In this paper, an active-sensing approach was conducted to identify the crack damage in pipeline structure

Weighing Imprisonment and Crime: 9 Experts Explore the Relationship Between Prisons and Crime Rates [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In the early 1990s, with violent crime at record levels and public alarm growing, federal and state lawmakers responded with new policies that sent more offenders to prison for longer periods.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Structural health monitoring of high voltage electrical switch ceramic insulators in seismic areas [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
High voltage electrical switches are crucial components to restart rapidly the electrical network right after an earthquake. But there currently exists no automatic procedure to check if these ceramic insulators have suffered after an earthquake, and ...
