Effects of Desiccation Practices of Cultured Atlantic Oysters (Crassostrea virginica) on Vibrio spp. in Portersville Bay, Alabama, USA.

open access: yesJournal of Food Protection, 2017
The expansion of off-bottom aquaculture to the Gulf of Mexico has raised public health concerns for human health officials. High temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico are associated with high levels of Vibrio parahaemolyticus and Vibrio vulnificus. Routine desiccation practices associated with off-bottom aquaculture expose oysters to ambient air, allowing

Effects of cyanobacteria Synechocystis spp. in the host-parasite model Crassostrea gasar–Perkinsus marinus

Aquatic Toxicology, 2017
Perkinsosis is a disease caused by protozoan parasites from the Perkinsus genus. In Brazil, two species, P. beihaiensis and P. marinus, are frequently found infecting native oysters (Crassostrea gasar and C. rhizophorae) from cultured and wild populations in several states of the Northeast region. The impacts of this disease in bivalves from Brazil, as

Screening and selection of stress resistant Lactobacillus spp. isolated from the marine oyster (Crassostrea gigas)

Anaerobe, 2010
We attempted to isolate Lactobacillus spp. from the marine oyster (Crassostrea gigas) and select stress resistant strains for development of a future marine aquaculture feed adjuvant. A total of 83 lactobacilli strains were isolated from oyster. They were all Gram-positive, rod-shaped and catalase-negative.

Susceptibility of Crassostrea ariakensis (Fujita 1913) to Bonamia and Perkinsus spp. Infections: Potential for Disease Transmission Between Oyster Species

Journal of Shellfish Research, 2008
Abstract Using PCR-based methodologies, we surveyed triploid Crassostrea ariakensis (Fujita 1913), introduced in experimental trials in the Chesapeake Bay, for parasites endemic to the native oyster and for Bonamia ostreae. Perkinsus sp. was detected in all in C.

Detection of Toxoplasma gondii in Crassostrea spp. oysters cultured in an estuarine region in eastern Amazon

Zoonoses and Public Health, 2019
AbstractThe aim of the present study was to detect DNA of Toxoplasma gondii in Crassostrea spp. oysters cultured in the state of Pará, Brazil. A total of 400 oysters were directly collected from a fixed rack system. Gills, gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and intervalvular liquid were separated and grouped into pool samples of 10 animals, resulting in 40 ...

Oyster reef community interactions: The effect of resident fauna on oyster (Crassostrea spp.) larval recruitment

Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, 2010
During their transition from the pelagic larval form to the benthic adult form, larvae are likely to encounter a diverse assemblage of resident invertebrates on oyster reefs. Fouling epifauna are generally believed to reduce the settlement of interspecific larvae through competitive exclusion and predation. Studies of these interactions, however, often

Yield Performance, Proximate Composition, Fatty Acid Profile and Economic Viability of Farmed Oyster (Crassostrea spp.) in Bangladesh

Bangladesh Journal of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, 2020
Oyster meat is consumed for its high nutritional value. Marine oysters (several species under the genus Crassostrea) have been commercially cultured long since around the world to satisfy the increased demand of oyster. Bangladesh has taken approaches to initiate oyster mariculture.

Growth of post-set oysters, Crassostrea virginica, on high-lipid strains of algal flagellates Tetraselmis spp.

Aquaculture, 1996
Abstract Nine microalgal strains from the prasinophyte genus Tetraselmis that were chosen for high total lipid content, and one marine strain of the chlorophyte Chlamydomonas , were compared with Isochrysis sp., strain T-ISO, as diets for oyster spat in a controlled laboratory feeding experiment.

Mangrove oyster (Crassostrea spp.) (Sacco, 1897) extractivism in Cananéia estuary (São Paulo, Brazil) from 1999 to 2006: capture and management evaluation [PDF]

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology, 2010
The oyster Crassostrea spp. is one of the main fisheries resources in the southern portion of São Paulo State. This paper aims to evaluate the extractivism of that resource, supplying subsidies to the implementation of management regulations. This study was developed in Cananéia, from February 1999 to December 2006. The oyster production data in dozens
