Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Cell geometry and membrane protein crowding constrain Escherichia coli growth rate, overflow metabolism, respiration, and maintenance energy

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The physical dimensions and shape of bacterial cells define the surface area available to acquire nutrients and the volume available for synthesizing proteins and DNA. Here, we use computational systems biology to decode the importance of cell geometry as a major determinant of prokaryotic phenotype, including growth rate and metabolic efficiency. This

Hydrological Seasonality Drives DOM–Bacteria Interactions in the Rushan River Basin

open access: yesMicroorganisms
To unravel hydrological controls on dissolved organic matter (DOM)–microbe interactions in river ecosystems, this study integrated 3D excitation–emission matrix spectroscopy (3D-EEMs), parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC), and 16S rRNA sequencing to ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

The Case for Reforming Euro Area Entry Criteria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The global economic and financial crisis has raised further concerns about the euro-entry criteria, in addition to other factors, such as the effective tightening of the criteria due to the enlargement of the EU from 12 to 27 members, the highly ...

Network divergence analysis identifies adaptive gene modules and two orthogonal vulnerability axes in pancreatic cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumors contain diverse cellular states whose behavior is shaped by context‐dependent gene coordination. By comparing gene–gene relationships across biological contexts, we identify adaptive transcriptional modules that reorganize into distinct vulnerability axes.

Spatiotemporal Patterns and Driving Factors of Forest Vegetation Carbon Storage in Jiangxi Province, China (1990–2024): A Geographically Weighted Regression Approach

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Forests, as the largest terrestrial carbon sink, play a critical role in mitigating climate change. Accurately estimating forest vegetation carbon storage and identifying its drivers are essential for evaluating regional carbon sink functions and ...
