X-ray micro-computed tomography of porosities in large-volume 3D-printed Ti–6Al–4V components using laser powder-bed fusion and their tensile properties

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology
Characterization of defects in large 3D printed metals is critical but challenging. This study reports on the X-ray micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) examination of porosities in large-volume 3D-printed and heat-treated titanium (Ti–6Al–4V) alloys ...

Dysregulation of of phospholipid-specific phagocytosis by B1 B cells in diet-induced obese mice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
B1 B cells have received increasing attention recently due to their newly discovered phagocytic and microbicidal capabilities. Several studies have demonstrated that B1 cells can phagocytize polystyrene fluorescent particles, bacteria (Staphylococcus ...

Screening for lung cancer: A systematic review of overdiagnosis and its implications

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Low‐dose computed tomography (CT) screening for lung cancer may increase overdiagnosis compared to no screening, though the risk is likely low versus chest X‐ray. Our review of 8 trials (84 660 participants) shows added costs. Further research with strict adherence to modern nodule management strategies may help determine the extent to which ...

Monocular reading performance measured by MNREAD-P acuity chart in normo-readers schoolchildren

open access: yesScientific Reports
This study aimed to determine and establish values for reading performance in normo-readers schoolchildren. Literate students aged 8 to 18 years old without visual impairments were recruited. The MNREAD-P chart was used to assess monocular reading acuity

Assessment of the Impact of a Head-mounted Augmented Reality Low Vision Aid on Vision and Quality of Life in Children and Young People with Visual Impairment

open access: yesBritish and Irish Orthoptic Journal
Introduction: Electronic head-mounted low vision aids (LVAs) can help children and young people (CYP) to access schoolwork and leisure activities which they would otherwise struggle to be able to do with traditional optical or hand held LVAs.

Glycosylated LGALS3BP is highly secreted by bladder cancer cells and represents a novel urinary disease biomarker

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Urinary LGALS3BP is elevated in bladder cancer patients compared to healthy controls as detected by the 1959 antibody–based ELISA. The antibody shows enhanced reactivity to the high‐mannose glycosylated variant secreted by cancer cells treated with kifunensine (KIF).

Improving PARP inhibitor efficacy in bladder cancer without genetic BRCAness by combination with PLX51107

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Clinical trials on PARP inhibitors in urothelial carcinoma (UC) showed limited efficacy and a lack of predictive biomarkers. We propose SLFN5, SLFN11, and OAS1 as UC‐specific response predictors. We suggest Talazoparib as the better PARP inhibitor for UC than Olaparib.
