Performance of local and local x improved chicken crosses under semi-intensive management system in Northern Uganda

open access: yesCogent Food & Agriculture, 2023
Despite the efforts to improve Uganda’s chicken production through crossbreeding, limited research has been conducted to establish the performance of local x improved chicken crosses under the dominant management systems used by chicken rearing ...

Speciation Through the Lens of Population Dynamics: A Theoretical Primer on How Small and Large Populations Diverge

open access: yesPopulation Ecology, EarlyView.
Population size and dynamics fundamentally shape speciation by influencing genetic drift, founder events, and adaptive potential. Small populations may speciate rapidly due to stronger drift, whereas large populations harbor more genetic diversity, which can alter divergence trajectories. We highlight theoretical models that incorporate population size

A stepwise emergence of evolution in the RNA world

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
How did biological evolution emerge from chemical reactions? This perspective proposes a gradual scenario of self‐organization among RNA molecules, where catalytic feedback on random mixtures plays the central role. Short oligomers cross‐ligate, and self‐assembly enables heritable variations. An event of template‐externalization marks the transition to

Genomic conservation of Mongolian horses promoted by preservation of the intangible cultural heritage of Naadam in Mongolia

open access: yesConservation Letters
Uncontrolled crossbreeding is a major challenge to the conservation of landrace horses in East Asia. Understanding the factors driving this trend is crucial for effective conservation efforts.

Evolutionary interplay between viruses and R‐loops

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Viruses interact with specialized nucleic acid structures called R‐loops to influence host transcription, epigenetic states, latency, and immune evasion. This Perspective examines the roles of R‐loops in viral replication, integration, and silencing, and how viruses co‐opt or avoid these structures.

Origin of life: β‐sheet amyloid conformers as the primordial functional polymers on the early Earth and their role in the emergence of complex dynamic networks

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The amyloid world hypothesis of the origin‐of‐life posits that the first functional polymers on the early Earth were structurally stable cross‐β‐sheet‐based peptide amyloids capable of Darwinian‐like evolution. Peptide amyloids display self‐replication and information transfer, as well as catalytic, adaptive, and evolutive properties.

Componentes do peso vivo em cordeiros e borregos Polwarth e cruzas Texel x Polwarth Live weight components in Polwarth and Texel x Polwarth lambs and hoggets

Weight gain and resistance to gastrointestinal nematode infections in two genetically diverse groups of cattle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Body weight gain (BWG) and gastrointestinal nematode challenge (GIN) were investigated in two genetically diverse groups of cattle. Thirty-two dairy calves (D = Swedish Red/Holstein) and 31 dairy × beef crosses (C = Swedish Red/Holstein × Charolais ...

Redox‐dependent binding and conformational equilibria govern the fluorescence decay of NAD(P)H in living cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this work, we reveal how different enzyme binding configurations influence the fluorescence decay of NAD(P)H in live cells using time‐resolved anisotropy imaging and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM). Mathematical modelling shows that the redox states of the NAD and NADP pools govern these configurations, shaping their fluorescence ...
