Anode‐Free Sodium Metal Batteries: From Materials Design to System‐Level Integration

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 58, 19 October 2026.
Anode‐free sodium metal batteries hold no sodium reserve, so every inefficiency becomes permanent loss. Resolving the inventory into reversible, dead, and chemically bound fractions exposes what Coulombic efficiency hides. Practical 500‐cycle operation requires above 99.95%, a threshold few systems meet under lean electrolyte and high areal capacity ...

Impact of Rapid Thermal Annealing on the Structural and Piezoelectric Properties of AlN Thin Films

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, Volume 12, Issue 19, 12 October 2026.
Aluminum nitride (AlN) is a biocompatible piezoelectric material suitable for energy harvesting in MEMS resonators. Through rapid thermal annealing, a threshold for CMOS‐compatible processes is established. AlN improved its crystallinity and enhanced the piezoelectric coefficient by ∼160%. Devices show an improvement in the electromechanical properties

Degradation Pathways of Silicon‐Based Anodes in Lithium‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, Volume 16, Issue 39, 21 October 2026.
Silicon‐based anodes undergo degradation through five primary pathways: (1) mechanical and structural deterioration of the active material, (2) loss of electrode integrity and electrical contact, (3) mechanical instability of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), characterized by repetitive fracture and deformation, (4) chemical instability of the ...

High‐Performance Noble‐Metal‐Free Perovskite Solar Cells Enabled by MoOX/Cr/Al Multilayer Electrodes

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, Volume 16, Issue 39, 21 October 2026.
Cost‐effective perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are developed using a noble‐metal‐free MoOX/Cr/Al multilayer electrode. The devices achieve a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.6%, competitive with that of Au‐based devices (26.3%), and a 25.5 cm2 mini‐module shows 21.3% PCE.

Cryo-FIB SEM for Characterization of the Structure of Fish Oil Emulsions

open access: yes, 2011
Addition of fish oil to food products to improve nutritional quality by the addition of omega-3 fatty acids is attractive both to the consumers and the food industry for reasons such as health benefits and added product value. The long chain omega-3 fatty acids contain a large number of double bonds which causes the fish oil to be susceptible to ...

Cryo-electron tomography: en route to the molecular anatomy of organisms and tissues

open access: yes
Cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) has become a key technique for obtaining structures of macromolecular complexes in their native environment, assessing their local organization and describing the molecular sociology of the cell.
