Thin aligned organic polymer films for liquid crystal devices [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
This project was designed to investigate the possibility of producing alignment layers for liquid crystal devices by cross-linking thin films containing anisotropic polymer bound chromophores via irradiation with polarised ultra violet light.

Influence of temperature and crystal orientation on tool wear during single point diamond turning of silicon

open access: yes, 2012
Owing to the capricious wear of cutting tools, ultra precision manufacturing of silicon through single point diamond turning (SPDT) operation becomes a challenging task.

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Optimal liquid crystal modulation controlled by surface alignment and anchoring strength

open access: yes, 2012
Spatial modulation of liquid crystals can be controlled and adjusted by light polarization, the degree of pretilt on the substrates, anchoring strength, and the experimental geometry.

Modelling of crystal plasticity effects on the crack initiation energies of a bi-crystal interface (Nb/ A120 3)

open access: yesComputer Assisted Methods in Engineering and Science, 2022
The present paper examines the crystal orientation effects on the energy at the crack-tip of niobium/ alumina joints. The analyses have been done using crystal plasticity theory.

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Flux engineering for indium tin oxide nanotree crystal alignment and height-dependent branch orientation

open access: yes, 2012
Single-crystal indium tin oxide (ITO) nanotrees with engineered trunk and branch orientations are grown using a recently reported technique combining vapor-liquid-solid growth and glancing angle deposition (VLS-GLAD).

Determination of crystal orientation by Ω-scan method in nickel-based single-crystal turbine blades [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The article presents an assessment of the crystal perfection of single-crystal turbine blades based on the crystal orientation and lattice parameter distribution on their surface. Crystal orientation analysis was conducted by the X-ray diffraction method

Molecular dynamics simulations of positively selected codons in FcγRI reveal novel biochemical binding properties

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Evolutionary analysis across 32 placental mammals identified positive selection at residues H148 and W149 in the immune receptor FcγR1. Ancestral reconstruction combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveals how these mutations may influence receptor structure and dynamics, providing insight into the evolution of antibody recognition and immune ...
