Dynamical structure of αB-crystallin

open access: yesProgress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology, 2014
The human small heat-shock protein αB-crystallin is an extremely difficult molecule to study, with its inherent structural dynamics posing unique challenges to all biophysical and structural biology techniques. Here we highlight how the polydispersity and quaternary dynamics of αB-crystallin are intrinsically inter-twined, and how this can impact on ...

Thermoreflectance Detection of Point Defects Resulting from Focused Ion Beam Milling

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Focused ion beam (FIB) milling is a common tool for nanoscale material processing, however irradiation damage, redeposition, and contamination can occur. We use several characterization tools to show FIB‐induced effects beyond 1 mm from the milled area.

Gapless surface states in a lattice of coupled cavities: a photonic analog of topological crystalline insulators

open access: yes, 2011
We show that a tetragonal lattice of weakly interacting cavities with uniaxial electromagnetic response is the photonic counterpart of topological crystalline insulators, a new topological phase of atomic band insulators.

Harnessing Fungal Biowelding for Constructing Mycelium‐Engineered Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Mycelium‐bound composites (MBCs) offer low‐carbon alternatives for construction, yet interfacial bonding remains a critical challenge. This review examines fungal biowelding as a biocompatible adhesive, elucidating mycelium‐mediated interfacial mechanisms and their role in material assembly. Strategies to optimize biowelding are discussed, highlighting

Coupled structural and magnetic properties of ferric fluoride nanostructures: part II, a Monte-Carlo Heisenberg study

open access: yes, 2010
We present a numerical study of the magnetic structure of nanostructured iron fluoride, using the Monte-Carlo-Metropolis simulated annealing technique and a classical Heisenberg Hamiltonian with a superexchange angle dependence.

Application of relativistic scattering theory of x rays to diffraction anomalous fine structure in Cu [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
We apply our recent first-principles formalism of magnetic scattering of circularly polarized x rays to a single Cu crystal. We demonstrate the ability of our formalism to interpret the crystalline environment related near-edge fine structure features in

Electrochemical Evaluation of Compressed Selective Laser Melted AlSi7Mg and AlSi10Mg Alloys in Chloride Environment

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The corrosion performance of AlSi7Mg and AlSi10Mg alloys produced through selective laser melting (SLM) was examined under compressive stress in a chloride environment. Electrochemical analyses, including open‐circuit potential (OCP), potentiodynamic polarization (CPP), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), were complemented by scanning ...

Atomistic simulation of structure and dynamics of columnar phases of hexabenzocoronene derivatives

open access: yes, 2006
Using atomistic molecular dynamics simulations we study solid and liquid crystalline columnar discotic phases formed by alkyl-substituted hexabenzocoronene mesogens. Correlations between the molecular structure, packing, and dynamical properties of these

Influence of Sample Preparation and Processing Procedures on the Thermal Diffusivity of MgO‐C Refractories

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The thermal diffusivity of MgO‐C refractories is highly sensitive to sample preparation and processing procedures. In this article, the effects of coking sequence, machining conditions, structural inhomogeneity, and graphite coating application on measurements using laser flash apparatus are systematically investigated.

A modulation wave approach to the order hidden in disorder

open access: yesIUCrJ, 2015
The usefulness of a modulation wave approach to understanding and interpreting the highly structured continuous diffuse intensity distributions characteristic of the reciprocal spaces of the very large family of inherently flexible materials which ...
