The malate–aspartate shuttle supports thermogenic lipid mobilization in brown adipocytes

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Brown fat cells burn lipids within their mitochondria to generate heat. This process involves two energy “shuttles,” one of which is naturally blocked during heat production. We found that the second shuttle (MASh) is not required to generate heat. However, when MASh is disabled, the fatty acids meant for fuel are instead converted back into stored fat.

Tyrosine residues at the substrate binding site in human NQO1 homodimer: Protein conformational dynamics and optimization of substrate binding geometry

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Human NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 is a homodimeric flavoenzyme crucial for redox metabolism and linked to significant health issues. Point mutations at Tyr126 and Tyr128 demonstrate their essential roles in optimizing substrate binding geometry for catalysis, as well as in half‐site reactivity and conformational dynamics during the enzyme's ...

Annual Research Review: Cash transfer programs and young people's mental health – a review of studies in the United States

open access: yesJournal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, Volume 66, Issue 4, Page 498-515, April 2025.
Worldwide, more than one in 10 children or adolescents is diagnosed with a mental disorder. Cash transfer programs, which aim to reduce poverty and improve life outcomes by providing direct cash assistance to families and incentivizing or enabling spending on education, health service use, dietary diversity and savings, have been shown to improve the ...

DNA extracted from boiled archival fish bones yields high‐quality whole‐genome sequencing data

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Archival samples provide a unique source of organismal DNA, offering the potential to extend the temporal scale of genetic studies by decades to centuries. Fish hard structures, such as otoliths and scales, serve as records for fish collected during fisheries monitoring across a large spatiotemporal scale.

Piscirickettsiosis in Farmed Turbot, Scophthalmus maximus

open access: yesJournal of Fish Diseases, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Piscirickettsia salmonis is a well‐established intracellular pathogen of farmed Atlantic salmon around the world. The bacterium has also been detected from a number of other hosts including lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus), seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).
