Numerical Determination of Fatigue Threshold from CTOD

Solid State Phenomena, 2016
The experimental procedure to obtain valid and comparable values of ΔKth is laborious and time consuming. The objective of this work is to determine ΔKth using a numerical approach. The CTOD is plotted versus load, and the fatigue threshold corresponds to the onset of plastic deformation.

Equivalent CTOD Concept for Correction of CTOD Toughness for Constraint Loss in Steel Weld Components

Materials Science Forum, 2012
This paper presents a new fracture assessment method, IST method developed as ISO 27306. The IST method implements an equivalent CTOD ratio, β, for the CTOD toughness correction for constraint loss in structural components. Using β, the standard fracture toughness specimen and structural components are linked at the same level of the Weibull stress ...

Measurements of CTOD and CTOA Around Surface-Crack Perimeters and Relationships Between Elastic and Elastic-Plastic CTOD Values

1990
A difficulty associated with predicting structural integrity is that the surface cracks found in structural components are three-dimensional whereas the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) and J-integral analytical techniques were derived from two-dimensional theory.

A CTOD-Based Mixed-Mode Fracture Criterion

1999
This paper presents a mixed-mode fracture criterion that uses the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) at a fixed distance behind the crack tip as the fracture parameter. This criterion is developed based on a detailed analysis of crack kinking in arbitrary directions. In essence, the proposed criterion states that crack growth occurs when the current

Application of CTOD in atomistic modeling of fracture

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2015
Abstract In this presentation we first review a method to use crack tip displacements and an estimate of the plastic zone to estimate fracture toughness. The same procedure was then applied on nanosized bcc-Fe cantilever beams with an initial crack. The results were then compared to literature.

Modifications To The CTOD Design Curve Approach

Offshore Technology Conference, 1986
ABSTRACT The existing crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) design curve approach is summarised, and new proposals are described for the assessment of finite width plates, plain materials and welded joints that have been post-welded heat treated.

A review of the CTOA/CTOD fracture criterion

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2003
Abstract The crack-tip-opening angle or displacement (CTOA/CTOD) fracture criterion is one of the oldest fracture criteria applied to fracture of metallic materials with cracks. During the past two decades, the use of elastic–plastic finite-element analyses to simulate fracture of laboratory specimens and structural components using the CTOA ...

CTOD-R curve construction from surface displacement measurements

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2011
Abstract The construction of a fracture resistance δ–R (or J–R) curve requires the appropriate measurement of crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) as a function of crack extension. This can be made by different procedures following ASTM E1820, BS7448 or other standards and procedures (e.g., GTP-02, ESIS-P2, etc.) for the measurement of fracture ...

CTOD FOR SLOW STABLE CRACK GROWTH CONDITIONS

Fatigue & Fracture of Engineering Materials & Structures, 1992
AbstractA procedure for CTOD calculation under slow stable crack growth conditions is presented in this work. This procedure gives more accurate CTOD values than those obtained using existing standards, and can be used in tests in which the slow stable crack growth is measured. An analysis of the errors made, when the traditional ([I], ASTM STP 668, pp.

A Comparison of CMOD-Based CTOD and J-Conversion CTOD in Shallow Crack Specimens

Key Engineering Materials, 2010
The ratio of J-conversion CTOD to CMOD-based CTOD was experimentally evaluated and analytically estimated in shallow crack specimens. It was demonstrated that the low strain hardening exponent in the Ramberg-Osgood relation reduced the CTOD ratio. A CTOD transformation equation, which was proposed by the authors, can transform CMOD-based CTOD into J ...
