Measurements of CTOD and CTOA Around Surface-Crack Perimeters and Relationships Between Elastic and Elastic-Plastic CTOD Values

1990
A difficulty associated with predicting structural integrity is that the surface cracks found in structural components are three-dimensional whereas the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) and J-integral analytical techniques were derived from two-dimensional theory.

Effect of physical crack growth on CTOD measurement

International Journal of Fracture, 1987
In high toughness ductile materials crack initiation is generally followed by a region of stable cracking. Such regions have been conveniently characterized in terms of crack growth resistance curves. Both J-integral and crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) concepts are successfully used to describe ductile crack growth using J-Aa and CTOD-Aa R-curves,

CTOD and J Relationships for a Growing Crack

1986
Tests were performed on three steels, A533-B, A508 Class 2, and ASTM A240 Thype 304 stainless. These materials exhibit a wide range of properties; their strain-hardening exponents n are within the range of 8 to 12 while their flow stresses sigma-O are within the range of 45 to 90 ksi.

A CTOD-Based Mixed-Mode Fracture Criterion

1999
This paper presents a mixed-mode fracture criterion that uses the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) at a fixed distance behind the crack tip as the fracture parameter. This criterion is developed based on a detailed analysis of crack kinking in arbitrary directions. In essence, the proposed criterion states that crack growth occurs when the current

The Use of CTOD Methods in Fitness for Purpose Analysis

1986
A three tier fracture assessment procedure is proposed which allows flaws to be assessed at various levels of complexity, depending on the application. All three levels utilise crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) as the fracture toughness input. The CTOD design curve, with minor modifications, occupies the first (simplest) level. Several restrictions

On the Experimental Determination of CTOD Based R-Curves

1986
It is demonstrated that the British Standard BS 5762 for measuring the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) can be modified such that the resulting CTOD is equal to the CTOD measured at the fatigue crack tip. The modifications consist of accounting for crack growth and adjustment of the rotation factor to the material under consideration.

Development and validation of a low-cost CTOD procedure

2013
A low-cost variation of CTOD testing is proposed. This variation follows BS7448, but has several nonstandard deviations, including:• Using a fixed notch width of 0.5 mm.• Using fatigue pre-cracks that are shorter than normal requirements to save the associated expense.• Using Single Edge Notched 3-point Bending (SENB) specimens with cross sections that
