Cultivation and sequencing of rumen microbiome members from the Hungate1000 Collection

open access: yesNature Biotechnology, 2018
Productivity of ruminant livestock depends on the rumen microbiota, which ferment indigestible plant polysaccharides into nutrients used for growth. Understanding the functions carried out by the rumen microbiota is important for reducing greenhouse gas ...

A Dirigent Gene, ZmDIR11, Positively Regulates Drought Tolerance in Maize

open access: yesAgronomy
The DIR gene family, which encodes Dirigent proteins, plays a crucial role in plant development and stress responses. However, the functions and mechanisms of this family in maize remained underexplored.

Cultivation of the gut bacterium Prevotella copri DSM 18205T using glucose and xylose as carbon sources

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, 2021
Prevotella copri DSM18205T is a human gut bacterium, suggested as a next‐generation probiotic. To utilize it as such, it is, however, necessary to grow the species in a reproducible manner.

Targeted isolation and cultivation of uncultivated bacteria by reverse genomics

open access: yesNature Biotechnology, 2019
Most microorganisms from all taxonomic levels are uncultured. Single-cell genomes and metagenomes continue to increase the known diversity of Bacteria and Archaea; however, while ’omics can be used to infer physiological or ecological roles for species ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.
