Surface-Induced Formation and Redox-Dependent Staining of Outer Membrane Extensions in Shewanella oneidensis MR-1

open access: yesFrontiers in Energy Research, 2019
The metal-reducing bacterium Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 produces extensions of its outer membrane (OM) and periplasm that contain cytochromes responsible for extracellular electron transfer (EET) to external redox-active surfaces, including minerals and ...

Reliably assessing the electronic structure of cytochrome P450 on today's classical computers and tomorrow's quantum computers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
An accurate assessment of how quantum computers can be used for chemical simulation, especially their potential computational advantages, provides important context on how to deploy these future devices. In order to perform this assessment reliably, quantum resource estimates must be coupled with classical simulations attempting to answer relevant ...

Novel Extracellular Electron Transfer Channels in a Gram-Positive Thermophilic Bacterium

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2021
Biogenic transformation of Fe minerals, associated with extracellular electron transfer (EET), allows microorganisms to exploit high-potential refractory electron acceptors for energy generation.

Protein Adsorption into Mesopores: A Combination of Electrostatic Interaction, Counterion Release and van der Waals Forces [PDF]

open access: yesLangmuir 30, 2729-2737 (2014), 2015
Bovine heart cytochrome c has been immobilized into the mesoporous silica host material SBA-15 in both its native folded and urea-unfolded state. The comparison of the two folding states' behavior casts doubt on the commonly used explanation of cytochrome c adsorption, i.e. the electrostatic interaction model.

Obesity alters the fitness of peritumoral adipose tissue, exacerbating tumor invasiveness in renal cancer through the induction of ADAM12 and CYP1B1

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 19, Issue 6, Page 1612-1632, June 2025.
Tumor microenvironment drives cancer formation and progression. We analyzed the role of human cancer‐associated adipocytes from patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) stratified as lean, overweight, or obese. RNA‐seq demonstrated that, among the most altered genes involved in the tumor–stroma crosstalk, are ADAM12 and CYP1B1, which were proven to be ...

Etoposide‐induced cancer cell death: roles of mitochondrial VDAC1 and calpain, and resistance mechanisms

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 19, Issue 6, Page 1855-1875, June 2025.
The complex mode of action of the topoisomerase II inhibitor etoposide in triggering apoptosis involves several mechanisms: overexpression of the mitochondrial protein VDAC1, leading to its oligomerization and formation of a large channel that mediates the release of pro‐apoptotic protein; and overexpression of the apoptosis regulators p53, Bax, and ...

The interplay between tubulins and P450 cytochromes during Plasmodium berghei invasion of Anopheles gambiae midgut. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2011
BACKGROUND: Plasmodium infection increases the oxidative stress inside the mosquito, leading to a significant alteration on transcription of Anopheles gambiae detoxification genes.

Deciphering Molecular Factors That Affect Electron Transfer at the Cell Surface of Electroactive Bacteria: The Case of OmcA from Shewanella oneidensis MR-1

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2022
Multiheme cytochromes play a central role in extracellular electron transfer, a process that allows microorganisms to sustain their metabolism with external electron acceptors or donors.

Specific Heat upon Aqueous Unfolding of the Protein Interior: A Theoretical Approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
We study theoretically the thermodynamics, over a broad temperature range (5 C to 125 C), related to hydrated water upon protein unfolding. The hydration effect is modeled as interacting dipoles in an external field, mimicking the influence from the unfolded surfaces on the surrounding water compared to bulk water.
