The defense of the organism against pathogens involves complex processes in which many different types of cells take part. Their functions are coordinated by polypeptide mediators collectively named cytokines. The intense research devoted to these molecules in the past has yielded an insight into their molecular characteristics, mode of action ...

The concept of the epidermis being a site for the initiation of immune responses has only been developed over the past decade. There is strong evidence that epidermal cells have immune functions. Accordingly the epidermis harbors dendritic cells having antigen presenting capacity and cells belonging to the T-cell family.
