Artificial intelligence‐enabled cytopathological interpretation of fluorescence microscopy images via a multimodal large language model

open access: yesQuantitative Biology, Volume 14, Issue 3, September 2026.
Abstract Quantitative analysis of fluorescence microscopy images remains a significant challenge in cytopathological assessments, as subjective interpretation and inter‐observer variability hinder reproducibility and standardization of classifications. In this study, an artificial intelligence‐assisted analytical framework utilizing a multimodal large ...

Practical Approach to Reporting Based on the International System for Serous Fluid Cytopathology

open access: yes
The International System for Serous Fluid Cytopathology (TIS) is intended for reporting cytological specimens from serous cavities: pleural, abdominal and pericardial cavities. TIS is being adopted into practice in cytology laboratories worldwide.

Use of the Ion Robot in the Diagnosis of Pulmonary Nodules: Fine Needle Aspiration Versus Cryobiopsy

open access: yesDiagnostic Cytopathology, Volume 54, Issue 8, Page 562-567, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Robotic‐assisted bronchoscopy platforms provide an innovative approach to the sampling of pulmonary nodules. As compared to other technologies, fiber‐optic shape‐sensing instrumentation allows for a more precise, accurate location and sampling of the target lesion with fewer complications.

Cumulative Cytological Assessment of Repeated Non‐Diagnostic Thyroid Fine Needle Aspirations: A Novel Approach to Reduce Diagnostic Uncertainty

open access: yesDiagnostic Cytopathology, Volume 54, Issue 8, Page 576-581, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Purpose Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is the primary diagnostic tool for evaluating thyroid nodules. However, 10%–21% of FNAs yield non‐diagnostic (ND) results (Bethesda category I). Repeated ND findings occur in 25%–67.5% of cases, creating diagnostic uncertainty and increased healthcare costs.

Parsing the thyroid cytopathology suspicious for malignancy diagnosis through molecular‐derived risk of malignancy and other related parameters: Insights into nodule characteristics and practice patterns

open access: yes
Introduction Thyroid cytopathology cases with suspicious for malignancy (SFM) diagnosis often result in resection. However, molecular testing offers details that may provide additional insights. In this study, the molecular profiles of SFM cases from two

Molecular profiling of breast cancer pleural effusions using cytology specimens: Impact of sample source and cytological features on next‐generation sequencing performance

open access: yesCancer Cytopathology, Volume 134, Issue 7, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Malignant effusions in breast cancer are a minimally invasive source for molecular profiling. Effusion‐derived cytology specimens, cell blocks (CB) and post‐ThinPrep PreservCyt (PTPC) supernatant, are reliable sources for molecular testing but differ in DNA concentration and turnaround time (TAT).

Quantitative Analysis of Cytologic Features: Application to Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma

open access: yesDiagnostic Cytopathology, Volume 54, Issue 7, Page 519-527, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Introduction Cytologic diagnosis relies on recognition of morphologic features, yet the diagnostic value of individual cytologic features or their combinations is rarely quantified. In this study, we apply a quantitative cytologic feature analysis (QCFA) approach that treats each cytologic feature as a diagnostic test with measurable ...
