Implementation and impact of primary HPV testing in cervical cancer screening: Historical perspectives and institutional experience at a large academic medical center

open access: yesCancer Cytopathology, Volume 134, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Recognition of high‐risk human papillomavirus (HPV) as the etiologic agent in nearly all cervical cancers has fundamentally reshaped screening strategies, driving the development and adoption of highly sensitive molecular HPV assays. Over the past several decades, cervical cancer screening guidelines have shifted from primarily cytology‐based ...

Screening efficiency over experience: Rapid target detection in low‐power field as a modifiable cognitive biomarker for diagnostic accuracy in digital cytology

open access: yesCancer Cytopathology, Volume 134, Issue 8, August 2026.
Abstract Background Traditionally, cytology expertise has been equated with professional experience. However, the transition to whole‐slide imaging and artificial intelligence (AI) necessitates a shift from exhaustive screening to rapid verification.

Two Novel Betarhabdovirins Infecting Ornamental Plants and the Peculiar Intracellular Behavior of the Cytorhabdovirus in the Liana Aristolochia gibertii

open access: yesViruses
Two novel members of the subfamily Betarhabdovirinae, family Rhabdoviridae, were identified in Brazil. Overall, their genomes have the typical organization 3′-N-P-P3-M-G-L-5′ observed in mono-segmented plant-infecting rhabdoviruses.

Use of the Ion Robot in the Diagnosis of Pulmonary Nodules: Fine Needle Aspiration Versus Cryobiopsy

open access: yesDiagnostic Cytopathology, Volume 54, Issue 8, Page 562-567, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Background Robotic‐assisted bronchoscopy platforms provide an innovative approach to the sampling of pulmonary nodules. As compared to other technologies, fiber‐optic shape‐sensing instrumentation allows for a more precise, accurate location and sampling of the target lesion with fewer complications.

In Vitro System for Studying Ilhéus Virus, a Neglected Arbovirus: Ultrastructural Characterization of Cytopathology, Morphology, and Morphogenesis

open access: yesViruses
Ilhéus Virus (ILHV) was first detected in 1944 in Ilhéus, state of Bahia, northeast Brazil. During cellular infection, orthoflaviviruses induce cellular changes related both to the replication process, the formation of replication complexes, and to ...

Cumulative Cytological Assessment of Repeated Non‐Diagnostic Thyroid Fine Needle Aspirations: A Novel Approach to Reduce Diagnostic Uncertainty

open access: yesDiagnostic Cytopathology, Volume 54, Issue 8, Page 576-581, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Purpose Fine needle aspiration (FNA) is the primary diagnostic tool for evaluating thyroid nodules. However, 10%–21% of FNAs yield non‐diagnostic (ND) results (Bethesda category I). Repeated ND findings occur in 25%–67.5% of cases, creating diagnostic uncertainty and increased healthcare costs.

Advancing Tumor Treatment Through Artificial Intelligence and Mathematical Modeling: A Comprehensive Review

open access: yesHealth Science Reports, Volume 9, Issue 8, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Background and Aims Solid tumors emerge from uncontrolled cell division and interactions with neighboring cells that influence their growth and resistance to therapy. Anti‐cancer drugs are developed to disrupt these processes, but they often damage healthy cells, making treatment difficult to manage safely and effectively. As the global cancer
