Getting back to (nucleo)base: Oligonucleotides incorporating a central 1‐ or 8‐mercuri‐6‐phenyl‐1H‐carbazole residue show great promise as high‐affinity hybridization probes, discriminating between all canonical nucleobases as well as 2‐ and 4‐thiothymines by melting temperature margins of at least 5 °C.

Acceleration of the Deamination of Cytosine through Photo-Crosslinking
Herein, we report the major factor for deamination reaction rate acceleration, i.e., hydrophilicity, by using various 5-substituted target cytosines and by carrying out deamination at high temperatures.

Non-Canonical GC Base Pairs and Mechanochemical Cleavage of DNA [PDF]
Properties of non-canonical GC Base Pairs and their relation with mechanochemical cleavage of DNA are analyzed. A hypothesis of the involvement of the Transient GC Wobble Base Pairs in the mechanisms of the mechanochemical cleavage of DNA and epigenetic mechanisms with participation of 5-methylcytosine is proposed.

Surface-Enhanced Hyper-Raman Spectra of Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, Thymine, and Uracil
Using picosecond excitation at 1064 nm, surface-enhanced hyper-Raman scattering (SEHRS) spectra of the nucleobases adenine, guanine, cytosine, thymine, and uracil with two different types of silver nanoparticles were obtained. Comparing the SEHRS spectra

Inorganic Nanomaterials Meet the Immune System: An Intricate Balance
Metal nanomaterials influence the immune responses, such as cytokine production and T‐cell activity. Unintended immune modulation can have significant consequences while its fine‐tuning may transform the oncology care. Within this review, a critical analysis is offered regarding the nano/immune‐interaction and suggests the future research directions to

Discovery of Bacterial Deaminases That Convert 5-Fluoroisocytosine Into 5-Fluorouracil
Cytosine is one of the four letters of a standard genetic code, found both in DNA and in RNA. This heterocyclic base can be converted into uracil upon the action of the well-known cytosine deaminase.

Shape resonance induced electron attachment to Cytosine: The effect of aqueous media [PDF]
We have investigated the impact of microsolvation on the shape resonance states of nucleobases, taking cytosine as a case study. To characterize the resonance position and decay width of the metastable states, we employed the newly developed DLPNO-based EA-EOMCCSD method in conjunction with resonance via Pad\'e approximation. Our calculations show that

Effects of cytosine modifications on DNA flexibility and nucleosome mechanical stability
Cytosine can undergo modifications, forming 5-methylcytosine (5-mC) and its oxidized products 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5-hmC), 5-formylcytosine (5-fC) and 5-carboxylcytosine (5-caC).
