Membrane damping by a constrained layer

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1984
An analysis of the effectiveness of a constrained layer damping treatment for in-plane vibrations of a plate is presented. The loss factor is shown to be that of an unconstrained layer treatment for frequencies below a cutoff frequency and to be substantially larger above this frequency.

Vibration and damping analysis of cylindrical shells with a constrained damping layer

Computers & Structures, 1993
Abstract The natural frequencies and loss factors in cylindrical shells with a constrained viscoelastic layer between two isotropic, elastic facings are studied using the finite element method. The finite element is developed based on a discrete layer theory assuming variation of inplane displacements across the thickness and a constant transverse ...

Tuned Constrained Layer Damping Of A Cantilevered Plate

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1994
Summary: A damping patch is shown to behave as a constrained layer damper (CLD) for the bending modes of a tapered cantilevered plate, while behaving as a tuned damper for the sway modes. This dual nature leads to higher damping capacity for the sway modes than would be otherwise possible using a similar coverage of conventional CLD, at the expense of ...

Joint Interface Layer Damping

Journal of Engineering for Industry, 1967
An experimental and theoretical study of the damping behavior of thin layers of viscoelastic material subject to different cyclic loading situations is presented. The idea of the study stems from an idealization of conditions which may be encountered at the joints and support boundaries of beams and plates if damping media, such as viscoelastic ...

Damping Properties Of Two-layered Cylindrical Shells With An Unconstrained Viscoelastic Layer

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 1994
Abstract Damping properties of flat layered plates and beams have been studied previously by many researchers. In a limited sense, the properties of curved structures have also been analyzed by the present, and other, authors. In such studies, the influence of shear deformation and thickness-wise extensional deformation on damping were neglected.

The prediction of the damping effectiveness of multiple constrained layer damping treatments

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1979
An accurate, closed form solution is presented to the problem of determining the damping effectiveness of a damping treatment on a beam consisting of an arbitrary number of alternate viscoelastic and elastic layers. It was found that the sensitivity of the damping effectiveness to temperature variations may be controlled by using dissimilar ...

Enhancing the Damping of Slabs by Viscoelastic Layers

Journal of the Structural Division, 1978
A study is presented of the potential of constrained viscoelastic layers in enhancing the damping of two-way slab floor systems with simply supported and clamped boundary conditions subjected to dynamic loading. The finite strip method is extended to the analysis of the resulting sandwich structures.

Longitudinal waves in a damped layered system

Ingenieur-Archiv, 1989
In the paper a layered system with a finite length connected to discrete elements is considered. It is assumed that the layers of the system as well as the discrete elements undergo longitudinal deformations only. In the considerations a wave method taking into account all wave reflections is utilized.

Vibration-damping constrained-layer constructions

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1985
A constrained-layer construction comprising a stiff layer or substrate and a layer of a viscoelastic polymer which is the reaction product of (a) 25 to 75 weight percent of an acryloyl or methacryloyl derivative of at least one oligomer, said oligomer having a glass transition temperature of less than 25° C.

On damping in two‐layer elastic‐viscoelastic media

ZAMM - Journal of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics / Zeitschrift für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, 2004
AbstractWe consider one‐dimensional wave propagation through two layers consisting, respectively, of an elastic and a viscoelastic medium. We show that, if the instantaneous elastic modulus of the viscoelastic medium is infinite, then there exists a family of modes with frequencies going to infinity, but damping rates going to zero.
