Characterizing light-dark cycles in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: a retrospective observational study

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2023
Objectives: To characterize bedside 24-h patterns in light exposure in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and to explore the environmental and individual patient characteristics that influence these patterns in this clinical setting. Methods: We ...

Angular Signatures of Annihilating Dark Matter in the Cosmic Gamma-Ray Background

open access: yes, 2008
The extragalactic cosmic gamma-ray background (CGB) is an interesting channel to look for signatures of dark matter annihilation. In particular, besides the imprint in the energy spectrum, peculiar anisotropy patterns are expected compared to the case of

Regulating Dark Patterns

open access: yes, 2023
Dark patterns have become increasingly pervasive in online choice architectures, encompassing practices like subscription traps, hiding information about fees, pre-selecting options by default, nagging, and drip pricing. Regulators around the world have started to express concerns that such practices are causing substantial consumer detriment.

Dark patterns in proxemic interactions [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the 2014 conference on Designing interactive systems, 2014
Proxemics theory explains peoples’ use of interpersonal distances to mediate their social interactions with others. Within Ubicomp, proxemic interaction researchers argue that people have a similar social understanding of their spatial relations with nearby digital devices, which can be exploited to better facilitate seamless and natural interactions ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Galaxy Satellites and the Weak Equivalence Principle

open access: yes, 2009
Numerical simulations of the effect of a long-range scalar interaction (LRSI) acting only on nonbaryonic dark matter, with strength comparable to gravity, show patterns of disruption of satellites that can agree with what is seen in the Milky Way.

Privately Policing Dark Patterns

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2023
Lawmakers around the country are crafting new laws to target "dark patterns" -- user interface designs that trick or coerce users into enabling cell phone location tracking, sharing browsing data, initiating automatic billing, or making whatever other choices their designers prefer. Dark patterns pose a serious problem.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Cold and Thermal Neutron Single Grating Dark-Field Imaging Extended to an Inverse Pattern Regime

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2022
Neutron dark-field imaging is a powerful tool for the spatially resolved characterization of microstructural features of materials and components. Recently, a novel achromatic technique based on a single absorption grating for the concurrent measurement ...
