Thawing Degree Days over Hokkaido

open access: yesJournal of the Japanese Society of Snow and Ice, 1961
The author calculated the thawing degree days (>0°C) over Hokkaido from the normals of daily mean temperature. Then, he drawed the isopleth of sum of thawing degree days at the end of every decades of month, counting from 1 st. January. As the normals are not satisfactory statistical data, for the purpose of planning various industries as well as flood

Japanese Beetles Begin Emergence [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Japanese beetle is an invasive insect capable of feeding on corn and soybean. This pest has been in Iowa since 1994 but its distribution in field crops is considered sporadic around the state.

The newfound relationship between extrachromosomal DNAs and excised signal circles

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Extrachromosomal DNAs (ecDNAs) contribute to the progression of many human cancers. In addition, circular DNA by‐products of V(D)J recombination, excised signal circles (ESCs), have roles in cancer progression but have largely been overlooked. In this Review, we explore the roles of ecDNAs and ESCs in cancer development, and highlight why these ...

Ahhhh, warmth! [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
A warm week provided much-welcomed heat for Iowa\u27s crops. Seasonal degree-day deficits largely evaporated over the 7 days from around 50 degree days behind last week to close to average statewide.

Conserved structural motifs in PAS, LOV, and CRY proteins regulate circadian rhythms and are therapeutic targets

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cryptochrome and PAS/LOV proteins play intricate roles in circadian clocks where they act as both sensors and mediators of protein–protein interactions. Their ubiquitous presence in signaling networks has positioned them as targets for small‐molecule therapeutics. This review provides a structural introduction to these protein families.

All Things Considered, It Could Be Worse! [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Corn and soybean condition has remained remarkably good in general as we enter August. Favorable weather in the early summer certainly has not made up for the early season planting problems that plagued parts of Iowa, but it has allowed crops to recover.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Foreshadowing the Monarchy’s Dilemma:A Rhetorical Analysis
of Judges 19

open access: yesTheoRhēma
The aim of this research is to analyze Judges 19 from a rhetorical perspective, applying the technique of chiastic-topographical structure. The analysis further contends that the toponyms serve a literary-theological function by foreshadowing the ...
