Roughness gradient induced spontaneous motion of droplets on hydrophobic surfaces: A lattice Boltzmann study

open access: yes, 2009
The effect of a step wise change in the pillar density on the dynamics of droplets is investigated via three-dimensional lattice Boltzmann simulations. For the same pillar density gradient but different pillar arrangements, both motion over the gradient ...

Control of laser wake field acceleration by plasma density profile [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
We show that both the maximum energy gain and the accelerated beam quality can be efficiently controlled by the plasma density profile. Choosing a proper density gradient one can uplift the dephasing limitation.

Metrizamide, a new density‐gradient medium [PDF]

open access: yesFEBS Letters, 1975
1. Introduction Isopycnic centrifugation has proved to be an extremely versatile technique for the fractionation of biological materials. However, there are some restric- tions on its use, mainly because of the physical and chemical characteristics of the compounds used to form the density gradients.

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Laplacian-level density functionals for the kinetic energy density and exchange-correlation energy

open access: yes, 2006
We construct a Laplacian-level meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) for the non-interacting (Kohn-Sham orbital) positive kinetic energy density $\tau$ of an electronic ground state of density $n$.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Mechanism of turbulence modulation of sediment-laden flow for the case of equilibrium suspended-load transport

open access: yesFrontiers in Physics
The interphase interaction between water flow and sediment and particle collision in sediment laden flow will modulate the flow turbulence. Due to the complexity of suspended sediment movement, the mechanism of water-sediment interaction has always been ...

Modeling vertical structure in circular velocity of spiral galaxy NGC 4244

open access: yes, 2015
We study the vertical gradient in azimuthal velocity of spiral galaxy NGC 4244 in a thin disk model. With surface density accounting for the rotation curve, we model the gradient properties in the approximation of quasi-circular orbits and find the ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.
