Dermal fibroblasts pretreated with a sterol Delta7-reductase inhibitor produce 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 upon UVB irradiation

open access: yes, 2006
As dermis is a physiological site of vitamin D3 photoproduction, the photo-endocrine vitamin D3 system was studied in dermal fibroblasts. Dermal fibroblasts contain the vitamin D receptor and induce 1alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3-24-hydroxylase [CYP24 ...

An Antimicrobial, Cell‐Adhesive, and Growth Factor‐Producing Living Material Engineered From Bacillus subtilis Biofilms for Wound Healing

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Bacillus subtilis is engineered to produce cell‐adhesive biofilms by functionalization of its biofilm scaffold protein TasA with a cell‐adhesion sequence. Living bacteria within the biofilm are also engineered to secrete growth factors and natively produce antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), resulting in a cell‐adhesive, antimicrobial, and growth factor ...

The Role of Viscoelasticity in Heterogeneous Glioblastoma Stem Cell Invasion in Biomimetic 3‐Dimensional Hydrogels

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
The role of viscoelasticity in the invasion of heterogeneous glioblastoma stem cells (GSCs) was investigated with GSCs categorized into subgroups based on molecular profile, as Reactive, Invasive, or Constructive using viscoelastic biomimetic hyaluronan‐oxime hydrogels.

Differentiation of Human Dermal Fibroblasts and Applications in Tissue Engineering

open access: yes, 2010
Tissue engineering applies principles of biology and engineering to the development of functional substitutes for damaged or lost tissues. Tools for the neo-generation of tissue in tissue engineering research include cells, biomaterials and soluble ...

Self‐Assembling Copolymers Encapsulating Single Endothelial Cells Induce Endogenous ECM Deposition and Vascular Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents the first demonstration of stable sub‐50‐micron single‐cell GPM vesicles fabricated through the intrinsic self‐assembly of an amphiphilic copolymer. Hierarchical assembly of cell containing GPM vesicles into microspheres enable tunable, sustained cell delivery with immune protection.

Macromolecular crowding in human tenocyte and skin fibroblast cultures: A comparative analysis

open access: yesMaterials Today Bio
Although human tenocytes and dermal fibroblasts have shown promise in tendon engineering, no tissue engineered medicine has been developed due to the prolonged ex vivo time required to develop an implantable device.

Surface Functionalization Modulates Collective Cell Behavior Near Topological Defects Induced by Topographical Patterning

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Strongly adhered cells align with concentric circular ridges and exhibit predominantly tangential motion, whereas weakly adhered cells fail to follow topographical guidance and display enhanced radial inward motion. ABSTRACT Living cells establish long‐range orientational order through collective alignment, giving rise to topological defects whose ...

PIK-III exerts anti-fibrotic effects in activated fibroblasts by regulating p38 activation.

open access: yesPLoS ONE
Systemic sclerosis (SSc), also known as scleroderma, is an autoimmune-driven connective tissue disorder that results in fibrosis of the skin and internal organs such as the lung.

Bilayered PEDOT:PSS–Collagen Scaffolds as Functional Architectures for Tissue Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
A bilayered scaffold integrates collagen and PEDOT:PSS as distinct yet interconnected 3D matrices, preserving their fibrillar and conductive characteristics. Spatial compartmentalization enables independent tailoring of each domain while maintaining mechanical stability and compatibility with electrochemical monitoring, providing a multifunctional ...

Extrusion‐Based Bioprinting of Living Bioinks for Tissue and Organ Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Extrusion‐based bioprinting is presented as the most versatile route for fabricating living, heterogeneous tissues. Its ability to combine diverse bioinks, support matrices, and advanced printhead geometries transforms familiar constraints into powerful biofabrication opportunities.
