Highly ordered micro‐sphere films with finely tunable mono‐ to multi‐layer for optical anti‐counterfeiting

open access: yesDroplet
Highly ordered films of polystyrene (PS) micro‐spheres have demonstrated various merits in optoelectronic devices, given their size‐ and thickness‐dependent optical properties.

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

Unified 1/2 scaling laws for droplet impact dynamics: From rigid to flexible thin films

open access: yesDroplet
Droplet impact dynamics on solid surfaces, which are ubiquitously present in aerospace engineering, energy systems, agricultural production, etc., involve complex fluid–structure interactions.

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Unveiling nanodroplet impact force on material interfaces

open access: yesDroplet
Nanodroplet impact on nanoscale material interfaces is widely involved in nanoscience and nanotechnology, affecting the technical reliability through complicated liquid‒solid interaction force, that is, the droplet impact force.

Iron homeostasis disruption and lipid peroxidation in skeletal muscle during short‐term immobilization

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
14‐day casting‐induced immobilization reduced gastrocnemius muscle mass and increased non‐heme iron and ferritin heavy chain levels. Despite iron accumulation, transferrin receptor 1 and iron regulatory protein 2 were paradoxically upregulated. Lipid peroxidation was elevated without compensatory antioxidant responses.

New insights into suspended drops: When soft matter meets acoustic levitation

open access: yesDroplet
Acoustic levitation has developed into a popular but elegant tool for the study of drops as well as soft matter due to its exceptional levitation capabilities to a variety of liquid samples.

Rapid screening of staphylokinase protein variants using an unpurified cell‐free expression system

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
An unpurified cell‐free protein synthesis (CFPS) platform enables rapid functional screening of staphylokinase variants. Direct plasminogen‐activation assays performed in microplate format provide real‐time activity readouts, allowing rapid identification and ranking of variants with improved or reduced fibrinolytic activity without protein ...

Liquid metal droplet dynamics

open access: yesDroplet
The unique properties to combine the dual merits of both liquids and metals together make the gallium‐based liquid metal (LM) droplets a class of unconventional substitute which possess great potential for a group of newly emerging areas, such as ...
