Sediment and particulate carbon removal by pipe erosion increase over time in blanket peatlands as a consequence of land drainage [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Land drainage is common in peatlands. Artificially drained blanket peat catchments have been shown to have a significantly greater soil pipe density than intact catchments.

Desiccation and recovery of periphyton biomass and density in a subtropical lentic ecosystem - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i3.14022

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Biological Sciences, 2013
This study assessed the desiccation effects on biomass and algal density of periphyton in a subtropical lentic ecosystem. This experiment was conducted with only one in situ experimental desiccation event for 15 hours in a mature periphytic community ...

Near-Infrared Metabolomic Fingerprinting Study of Lichen Thalli and Phycobionts in Culture: Aquaphotomics of Trebouxia lynnae Dehydration

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2022
Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is an accurate, fast and safe technique whose full potential remains to be exploited. Lichens are a paradigm of symbiotic association, with extraordinary properties, such as abiotic stress tolerance and adaptation to ...

CDK11 inhibition induces cytoplasmic p21WAF1 splice variant by p53 stabilisation and SF3B1 inactivation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
CDK11 inhibition stabilises the tumour suppressor p53 and triggers the production of an alternative p21WAF1 splice variant p21L, through the inactivation of the spliceosomal protein SF3B1. Unlike the canonical p21WAF1 protein, p21L is localised in the cytoplasm and has reduced cell cycle‐blocking activity.

Tun formation is not a prerequisite for desiccation tolerance in the marine tidal tardigrade Echiniscoides sigismundi [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The so-called ‘tun’ state is best known from limno-terrestrial tardigrades and rotifers that rely on this compact body shape for anhydrobiotic survival.

Inactivation of Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes in Tahini by Microwave Heating

open access: yesFoods, 2021
Tahini (sesame paste) is a traditional food. Numerous foodborne outbreaks have been associated with it. This study aimed to (i) explore the efficiency of 2450 MHz microwave heating at 220, 330, 440, 550, and 660 W on the inactivation of Salmonella spp ...

Exploiting metabolic adaptations to overcome dabrafenib treatment resistance in melanoma cells

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We show that dabrafenib‐resistant melanoma cells undergo mitochondrial remodeling, leading to elevated respiration and ROS production balanced by stronger antioxidant defenses. This altered redox state promotes survival despite mitochondrial damage but renders resistant cells highly vulnerable to ROS‐inducing compounds such as PEITC, highlighting redox

Numerical analysis of desiccation, shrinkage and cracking in low plasticity clayey soils [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This paper presents a numerical study of the desiccation processes of low-plasticity clayey soils that usually result in shrinkage and often in cracking.

The aggregation of Brucella abortus occurs under microaerobic conditions and promotes desiccation tolerance and biofilm formation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Brucella abortus causes brucellosis mainly in cattle. The infection is transmitted to humans by ingestion of animal products or direct contact with infected material.
