Data-driven engineering design research: Opportunities using open data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Engineering Design research relies on quantitative and qualitative data to describe design-related phenomena and prescribe improvements for design practice.

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

In Another Life Another Being: On Design and the Wages of Decoloniality

open access: yesDiseña
Despite the struggles for design disciplines to confront their colonial legacies and practices, the question remains: who can truly afford a decolonizing practice worthy of the name?

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Towards Translation Design A New Paradigm for Design Research

open access: yes, 2016
In this paper we explore the concept of translation, starting from the assumption that it constitutes an essential reference for design culture. We assume that a designer (and in particular a communication designer) is a “translator”, since he realises a

Phosphoinositides and inositol phosphates as molecular glues

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Inositol phosphates (IPs) and phosphoinositides (PIPs) regulate diverse eukaryotic processes. Beyond recruiting signaling proteins or acting as structural cofactors, recent studies suggest they mediate protein–protein interactions as natural molecular glues.

Data collection and product development : combining Matlab and Arduino to develop natural user interfaces (NUI)

open access: yes, 2021
Designers need to become more comfortable collecting, discussing and using quantitative data to inform and substantiate design decisions in the scoping phase of design projects.

Facilitating Design Research by Mapping Design Research Trajectories.

open access: yes, 2014
Design research is an emerging paradigm in the study of learning. It is far from a mature methodology, as it faces a variety of difficulties, one of which is the characterization of the research process. We mapped the design trajectory proposed by Sandoval to capture the complex process of design research.

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.
