Atherogenic aspects of desmosterol metabolism caused by prolonged triparanol administration
Life Sciences, 1966Abstract Mongolian gerbils treated with triparanol at the dose levels of 12.5, 25.0, and 50.0 mg/kg body weight for forty weeks resulted in a decrease of blood and liver cholesterol when compared to the controls injected with Wesson Oil. No desmosterol was detected by gas chromatography of control gerbils.

Desmosterol, an intermediate in dealkylation of β-sitosterol in the tobacco hornworm
Life Sciences, 1967The mechanism of dealkylation of phytosterols such as β-sitosterol to cholesterol in insects is an important and little understood biochemical transformation. This alteration of the sterol side chain provides a means for omnivorous and particularly phytophagous insects to obtain their essential cholesterol from foodstuffs that are either very low or ...

Efflux and plasma transport of biosynthetic desmosterol
Previous work shows that the efflux of biosynthetic desmosterol from cells is three times more efficient than that of cholesterol. We wanted to determine the mechanism of this enhanced release. We labeled CHO-K1 cells with (3H) acetate precursor and measured sterols in the whole cells, plasma membranes and caveolae, and those released to high density ...Jane Ellen Phillips, William J.
