Quantifying Sources of Subseasonal Prediction Skill in CESM2 Within a Perfect Modeling Framework

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 7, 16 April 2026.
Abstract The success of numerical weather prediction depends on accurate atmospheric initialization, but at subseasonal lead times, land and ocean initial states become increasingly important. Predictability on these timescales arises from slowly evolving land surface conditions such as soil moisture and snowpack, convectively coupled waves such as the

Revealing the Mechanisms of Heat Extremes Using an AI Enabled Diagnostic Framework

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 7, 16 April 2026.
Abstract Heat extremes have become a major health hazard around the world. Understanding their mechanisms remains a major challenge because the physical drivers interact in a nonlinear way. Here we introduce a globally perturbed reforecast framework driven by the Neural general circulation model (NeuralGCM).

A multi‐network approach to assess how physical templates shape stream fish ecological strategies

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 7, Issue 2, April–June 2026.
This multi‐network framework identifies a continuous topological gradient of fish ecological strategies—comprising Dispersal Gateways, Integrated Connectors, and Mass Effect Dominated species—within the dendritic river template. The functional role of stream reaches is scale‐sensitive, particularly at headwater extremes where sites operate as critical ...

The Impact of Water Hyacinth on the Welfare of Fishing Communities: Evidence From Lake Tana Fisheries, Ethiopia

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 6, Issue 2, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Water hyacinth (hereafter, WH) is known as ‘the green devil' and becomes a threat to the fishing community whose livelihood solely relies on fishing activities. Although there are immense assessment studies related to WH, the real causal impact of this invasive weed on the fishing community has not yet been properly quantified. In filling this

Enhancing Air Quality Simulations With Neural Downscaling Architectures

open access: yesAtmospheric Science Letters, Volume 27, Issue 4, April 2026.
We present a machine learning‐based framework for downscaling air pollutant concentrations from 6 km to 1 km resolution over Europe. The model accurately reconstructs fine‐scale PM2.5 and NO2 patterns across scenarios using a single, generalizable architecture.
