Resistance in the Genus Spodoptera: Key Insect Detoxification Genes

open access: yesInsects, 2021
Simple Summary The moth larvae are among the most damaging pest species on crops worldwide. In this review, we focus on the genus Spodoptera, which can feed on many crops such as rice, cotton or corn.

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...

Detoxification of xenobiotics by plants: chemical modification and vacuolar compartmentation

open access: yes, 1997
Monochlorobimane (BmCl), a non-fluorescent cell-permeant compound that reacts with glutathione to yield a strong blue fluorescent conjugate bimane-glutathione (Bm-SG), was used to trace the glutathione-dependent detoxification of xenobiotics in plant ...

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Relationship between different levels of internet use and depressive tendencies in Chinese college students: the chain mediating effect based on physical activity and social adaptability

open access: yesBMC Psychology
Objective To investigate the relationship between internet use, physical activity, social adaptability, and depressive tendencies of college students, and to reveal the “advantages” and “disadvantages” of internet use around the “dose-effect”. Method The

In vivo detoxification of furfural during lipid production by the oleaginous yeast Trichosporon fermentans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In vivo detoxification of furfural by the oleaginous yeast, Trichosporon fermentans, under lipid-producing (i.e., nitrogen-limited) conditions was evaluated for the first time.

Dimethyl fumarate combined with cisplatin at subcytotoxic doses sensitizes cervical cancer toward ferroptosis and apoptosis through GSH restriction and p53 (re)activation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) reduces growth of HPV‐positive cervical cancer spheroids and induces ferroptosis in cervical cancer cells via blocking SLC7A11/Glutathione (GSH) axis. Combination of subcytotoxic doses of DMF and cisplatin (CDDP) further suppresses spheroid growth and drives cell death in 2D culture models.
