The Diagnostic Performance Feedback “Calibration Gap”: Why Clinical Experience Alone Is Not Enough to Prevent Serious Diagnostic Errors

open access: yesAEM Education and Training, 2018
Medical diagnostic errors can be thought of as the bottom of the iceberg of patient safety—a hidden yet vast source of morbidity and mortality. According to the U.S.

EDNRB‐dependent endothelin signaling reduces proliferation and promotes proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition in gliomas

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Glioma cells mainly express the endothelin receptor EDNRB, while EDNRA is restricted to a perivascular tumor subpopulation. Endothelin signaling reduces glioma cell proliferation while promoting migration and a proneural‐to‐mesenchymal transition associated with poor prognosis. This pathway activates Ca2+, K+, ERK, and STAT3 signalings and is regulated

Developing a Questionnaire to Investigate Monthly Human Errors Among Railway Traffic Control Room Employees [PDF]

open access: yesIranian Rehabilitation Journal
Objectives: The working situation of railway traffic control rooms (RTCR) employees makes them susceptible to human error. On the other hand, the occurrence of human error by these staff can lead to catastrophic events.

Diagnostic Efficacy of Morphological Characters of Larval \u3ci\u3eTramea Lacerata\u3c/i\u3e Hagen and \u3ci\u3eTramea Onusta\u3c/i\u3e Hagen (Odonata: Libellulidae) in the Prairie Region of Missouri [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Distinguishing among species of larvae of the dragonfly genus Tramea historically has been problematic, largely due to conflicting characterizations of the larvae of T. lacerata Hagen and T. onusta Hagen (Odonata: Libellulidae) in the literature.

Diagnostic errors by medical students: results of a prospective qualitative study

open access: yesBMC Medical Education, 2017
BackgroundDiagnostic errors occur frequently in daily clinical practice and put patients’ safety at risk. There is an urgent need to improve education on clinical reasoning to reduce diagnostic errors.

Engineered extracellular vesicles enriched with the miR‐214/199a cluster enhance the efficacy of chemotherapy in ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of the miR‐214/199a cluster is associated with recurrence in ovarian cancer. Engineered small extracellular vesicles (m214‐sEVs) elevate miR‐214‐3p/miR‐199a‐5p in tumor cells, suppress β‐catenin, TLR4, and YKT6 signaling, reprogram tumor‐derived sEV cargo, reduce chemoresistance and migration, and enhance carboplatin efficacy and survival in ...

IMPDH inhibition enhances cytarabine efficacy in SAMHD1‐expressing leukaemia cells via guanine nucleotide depletion

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytarabine is a key therapy for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), but its efficacy is limited by the dNTPase SAMHD1, which hydrolyses its active metabolite. Screening nucleotide biosynthesis inhibitors revealed that IMPDH inhibitors selectively sensitise SAMHD1‐proficient AML cells to cytarabine.

Keratin 19 as a prognostic marker and contributing factor of metastasis and chemoresistance in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Keratin 19 (KRT19) is overexpressed in high‐grade serous ovarian cancer with high levels of Kallikrein‐related peptidases (KLK) 4–7 and is associated with poor survival. In vivo analyses demonstrate that elevated KRT19 increases peritoneal tumour burden.
