Implementation of XpertMalTyph: An Expert System for Medical Diagnosis of the Complications of Malaria and Typhoid [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The dearth of medical experts in the developing world has subjected a large percentage of its populace to preventable ailments and deaths. Also, because of the predominant rural communities, the few medical experts that are available always opt for ...

Supporting Defect Causal Analysis in Practice with Cross-Company Data on Causes of Requirements Engineering Problems

open access: yes, 2017
[Context] Defect Causal Analysis (DCA) represents an efficient practice to improve software processes. While knowledge on cause-effect relations is helpful to support DCA, collecting cause-effect data may require significant effort and time.

Rank-normalization, folding, and localization: An improved $\widehat{R}$ for assessing convergence of MCMC

open access: yes, 2020
Markov chain Monte Carlo is a key computational tool in Bayesian statistics, but it can be challenging to monitor the convergence of an iterative stochastic algorithm.

Bivariate beta distribution: parameter inference and diagnostics

open access: yes, 2023
Correlated proportions appear in many real-world applications and present a unique challenge in terms of finding an appropriate probabilistic model due to their constrained nature. The bivariate beta is a natural extension of the well-known beta distribution to the space of correlated quantities on $[0, 1]^2$.

Novel Genetic Risk Factor Identified for L‐Asparaginase‐Induced Pancreatitis in Pediatric Patients With Cancer

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background L‐asparaginase is a critical component in treatment protocols for pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Acute pancreatitis reactions can necessitate delays and, in some cases, discontinuation of L‐asparaginase, which compromises outcomes.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Dynamic Emotion Recognition and Social Inference Ability in Traumatic Brain Injury: An Eye-Tracking Comparison Study

open access: yesBehavioral Sciences, 2023
Emotion recognition and social inference impairments are well-documented features of post-traumatic brain injury (TBI), yet the mechanisms underpinning these are not fully understood.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
