Interaction between dibucaine and K+ on smooth muscle

Summary The effect of dibucaine on electrical and mechanical activity of taenia coli has been studied. The myolytic activity of dibucaine is accompanied by the appearance of large regular spikes coupled to rhythmic phasic contractions. Furthermore dibucaine induces a reversal of the mechanical response to acetylcholine.

In a 13-year-old girl, photoallergic dermatitis was caused by dibucaine hydrochloride, which was used as a local anesthetic in the treatment of her dental caries. The action spectrum for the photosensitivity reaction was in the long-wave ultraviolet (UVA) range.
