Coral calcification in a changing World and the interactive dynamics of pH and DIC upregulation

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Coral calcification is dependent on the mutualistic partnership between endosymbiotic zooxanthellae and the coral host. Here, using newly developed geochemical proxies (δ11B and B/Ca), we show that Porites corals from natural reef environments exhibit a ...

Meta‐Rod Mechanical Metamaterials With Programmable Reconfiguration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Existing mechanical metamaterials achieve programmable large deformations in planar square or cubic configurations, restricted by required complex boundary conditions. This research proposes a 1D metamaterial, Meta‐rod, with linear, bending, twisting, area, and volume deformation modes.

dic(7;9)(p11-13;p11) [PDF]

open access: yesAtlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology, 2011
Dicentric (7;9)(p11-13;p11) is a rare but recurrent abnormality in pediatric and adult precursor B acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL). The rarity precludes a deep understanding of its biology and associated prognosis. However, recent findings have correlated dic(7;9) and PAX5 mutations, highlighting this cytogenetic event's involvement in ...

From Mechanics to Electronics: Influence of ALD Interlayers on the Multiaxial Electro‐Mechanical Behavior of Metal–Oxide Bilayers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Ultrathin AlOxHy interlayers between aluminum films and polymer substrates significantly improve electro‐mechanical properties of flexible thin film systems. By precisely controlling interlayer thickness using atomic layer deposition, this study identifies an optimal interlayer thickness of 5–10 nm that enhances ductility and delays cracking.

Development of a spirulina feed effective only for the two larval stages of Schistosoma mansoni, not the intermediate host mollusc

open access: yesTropical Medicine and Health
Background Schistosomiasis control relies primarily on mass drug administration with praziquantel. However, persistent reinfection and high treatment costs remain significant challenges.

Two‐Way Shape Memory Alloy and Polymer Composite Hybrid Smart Actuator With High Speed, Accuracy, and Reversible Deformation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Tailored thermo‐mechanical properties of shape memory polymer composites enable large reversible deformation as well as high actuation speed. Moreover, a structural design with curvature in the transverse direction achieves sub‐second actuation on heating and a larger recovery ratio on cooling. Finally, these newly developed smart two‐way actuators can

Repeat dose exposure of PM2.5 triggers the disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) in SD rats

open access: yesScience of the Total Environment, 2019
Epidemiological evidence suggests that fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in air pollution promotes the formation of deep venous thrombosis. However, no evidence is available on the effects of PM2.5 lead to disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).

Mechanically Stable and Tunable Photoactivated Peptide‐Based Hydrogels for Soft Tissue Adhesion

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A collagen‐like peptide hydrogel platform is developed using supramolecular self‐assembly and light‐triggered crosslinking. It creates mechanically stable, tunable hydrogels with cytocompatibility and biodegradability, making them potential soft tissue adhesives.

Tensile testing of sheet metals at elevated temperatures with optical strain rate control [PDF]

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences
The manufacturing of sheet metal parts from lightweight alloys is often restricted due to limited formability of the applied materials at room temperature. To overcome this issue, thermally supported forming processes like hot forming are used.

Digital image correlation (DIC) for measuring strain in brick masonry specimen using Ncorr open source 2D MATLAB program

open access: yes, 2019
This micro-article is focused on the application of DIC in measuring strain for a 2D structural element like brick masonry specimen. Conventional techniques of strain measurements involve devices like strain gauges, LVDTs, dial gauges and extensometers ...
