Dietary calcium in galactosaemia

The diets of 19 galactosaemic patients were assessed for calcium and phosphorous intake. Despite the use of infant soya formula or calcium‐supplemented soya milk the reference nutrient intake (RNI) for calcium was only met in 26% of the group; all patients met > 100% of the RNI for phosphorous.

A pilot survey was made of the dietary calcium intake of normotensive and hypertensive individuals. Compared to 44 normotensive controls, 46 subjects with essential hypertension reported significantly less daily calcium ingestion (668 ± 55 milligrams compared to 886 ± 89 milligrams).

Rapid assessment of dietary calcium intake

A five-food item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and a 3-day food diary (3DFD) were used to estimate daily dietary calcium (Ca) intake in 32 patients aged 1-17 years. Median and IQR of Ca intake from 3DFD was 840 mg and 438 mg while from FFQ it was 700 mg and 987 mg, respectively.
