Differential Mode Delay Management in Spliced Multimode Fiber Transmission Systems
Optical Fiber Communication Conference/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference 2013, 2013Influence of fiber splice to differential mode delay (DMD) in mode-division multiplexed fiber links is analyzed. We show that DMD managed links, even with significant mode coupling due to splices, strongly reduce the link DMD.

A geometrical optics treatment of differential mode delay
Optical and Quantum Electronics, 1980We consider the problem of expressing the index of the refraction profile of a graded-index fibre or planar waveguide in terms of the results of differential mode delay measurements. We develop a perturbative solution to this problem within the context of geometrical optics by assuming that only meridional rays contribute experimentally.

We analyze two-mode transmission for 402-Gb/s 3MDM-PM-QPSK-OFDM modulation and different DMD values. We show that only with low-DMD fiber it is possible to effectively equalize mode coupling and bridge long-haul transmission distances.
