Design of Few-Mode Fibers With Arbitrary and Flattened Differential Mode Delay [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 2013
This letter proposes the use of a refractive index profile with a graded core and a cladding trench for the design of few-mode fibers, aiming an arbitrary differential mode delay (DMD) flattened over the C+ L band. By optimizing the core grading exponent and the dimensioning of the trench, a deviation lower than 0.01 ps/km from a target DMD is observed

Differential mode delay diagnostics for LP modes traversing a few-mode fiber

Applied Optics, 2021
We provide differential mode delay (DMD) diagnostics for linearly polarized (LP) modes traversing a few-mode fiber (FMF). We employ a modal interferometer method with a butt coupling mechanism to measure the DMD between any two modes guided in FMFs with step-index (SI) and depressed-cladding profiles. The measurement principle is based on investigating

Influence of mode coupling on differential mode delay

Applied Optics, 1983
The manner in which the differential mode delay (DMD) pulse response is affected by ellipticity- and microbending-induced mode coupling has been analyzed numerically. We have considered both a fiber profile containing a central index dip and fiber profiles with sinusoidal ripples.
