CN excitation and electron densities in diffuse molecular clouds [PDF]

open access: greenMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2013
Utilising previous work by the authors on the spin-coupled rotational cross-sections for electron-CN collisions, data for the associated rate coefficients is presented. Data on rotational, fine-structure and hyperfine-structure transition involving rotational levels up to $N$=20 are computed for temperatures in the range 10 -- 1000~K.

THE TRANSITION FROM DIFFUSE ATOMIC GAS TO MOLECULAR CLOUD IN TAURUS [PDF]

open access: greenProceedings of the 74th International Symposium on Molecular Spectroscopy, 2019
We study four lines of sight that probe the transition from diffuse molecular gas to molecular cloud material in Taurus. Measurements of atomic and molecular absorption are used to infer the distribution of species and the physical conditions in the direction to stars behind the Taurus Molecular Cloud.

The contribution of unresolved sources on the gamma-ray spectrum of molecular clouds [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2023
Fermi-LAT observations of the large-scale diffuse gamma-ray emission unveiled that in some locations, towards the inner Galaxy, the spectrum of this component is harder than the local one, measured at the Earth position. If this signal is associated with

TRACING TURBULENT AMBIPOLAR DIFFUSION IN MOLECULAR CLOUDS [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2010
Though flux freezing is a good approximation frequently assumed for molecular clouds, ambipolar diffusion (AD) is inevitable at certain scales. The scale at which AD sets in can be a crucial parameter for turbulence and the star formation process.

Dissociative Recombination of Rotationally Cold OH+ and Its Implications for the Cosmic Ray Ionization Rate in Diffuse Clouds

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters, 2023
Observations of OH ^+ are used to infer the interstellar cosmic ray ionization rate in diffuse atomic clouds, thereby constraining the propagation of cosmic rays through and the shielding by interstellar clouds, as well as the low energy cosmic ray ...

Shaken or Stirred: The Diffuse Interstellar Medium with Exceptionally High SiO Abundance

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Interstellar shocks, a key element of stellar feedback processes, shape the structure of the interstellar medium (ISM) and are essential for the chemistry, thermodynamics, and kinematics of interstellar gas.

Molecular cloud abundances and anomalous diffusion [PDF]

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, 2007
AbstractThe chemistry of molecular clouds has been studied for decades, with an increasingly general and sophisticated treatment of the reactions involved. Yet the treatment of turbulent diffusion has remained extremely sketchy, assuming simple Fickian diffusion with a scalar diffusivity D.
