Red macroalgae in the genomic era

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 240, Issue 2, Page 471-488, October 2023., 2023
Summary Rhodophyta (or red algae) are a diverse and species‐rich group that forms one of three major lineages in the Archaeplastida, a eukaryotic supergroup whose plastids arose from a single primary endosymbiosis. Red algae are united by several features, such as relatively small intron‐poor genomes and a lack of cytoskeletal structures associated ...

Morphological and molecular characterization of the monogenean gill parasite, Acleotrema maculatus, infecting Argyrops filamentosus fish in the Red Sea, Saudi Arabia [PDF]

open access: yesArquivo Brasileiro de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia, 2023
Fish are considered one of the important sources of protein which are invaded by different parasites. This study aimed to shed light on monogenean parasites that infect fish within the family Sparidae in Saudi Arabia.

Phylogenetic analysis of avian schistosome Trichobilharzia regenti (Schistosomatidae, Digenea) from naturally infected hosts in northern Iran

open access: yesVeterinary Medicine and Science, Volume 9, Issue 5, Page 2359-2367, September 2023., 2023
This article demonstrates new information about the current status of Trichobilharzia species in infected ducks and snails in the aquaculture areas of Mazandaran Province in northern Iran. The new genotype of Trichobilharzia cf. regenti is circulating between migratory and domestic ducks in the study areas.

Parasitism by a Digenea in Lucina pectinata (Mollusca: Lucinidae) [PDF]

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology, 2017
Abstract Lucina pectinata is an important economic resource in the Brazilian coast. This study reports parasitism caused by a Digenea in this species. The specimens (n = 470) were collected in December 2012 in a mangrove swamp of the Cachoeira River estuary, Bahia, Brazil.

A global review of problematic and pathogenic parasites of farmed tilapia

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 15, Issue S1, Page 92-153, February 2023., 2023
Abstract Over the past 80 years, tilapia have been translocated globally for aquaculture; active production is recorded in >124 countries. Of 7 million tonnes of tilapia produced in aquaculture, 79% is from 79 countries outside the natural range of tilapia.

Study on Cattle Trematodiasis and Related Risk Factors in Damot Sore District, Wolaita Zone, Southern Ethiopia

open access: yesJournal of Parasitology Research, Volume 2023, Issue 1, 2023., 2023
Trematodes are chronic, debilitating diseases in livestock, causing significant economic losses worldwide. From mid‐December 2021 to May 2022, a cross‐sectional study was carried out in the Damot Sore District to estimate the prevalence of trematode infections in cattle and associated risk factors.

Mussel parasite richness and risk of extinction

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 36, Issue 6, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Parasite conservation is important for the maintenance of ecosystem diversity and function. Conserving parasites relies first on understanding parasite biodiversity and second on estimating the extinction risk to that biodiversity. Although steps have been taken independently in both these areas, previous studies have overwhelmingly focused on

Neglected symbionts and other metazoan invertebrates associated with molluscs from Africa's largest lake: Diversity, biotic interactions and bioindication

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 67, Issue 12, Page 2089-2099, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Freshwater molluscs are hosts for diverse metazoan symbionts. However, apart from the digenean helminths, symbionts of molluscs are underreported worldwide. Therefore, this study focused on the diversity of oligochaetes, leeches, mites, insect larvae and nematodes associated with gastropods and bivalves from Lake Victoria, East Africa. Overall,

A monogenean parasite reveals the widespread translocation of the African clawed frog in its native range

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 59, Issue 11, Page 2670-2687, November 2022., 2022
Data from cointroduced, host‐specific parasites, as tags for translocation, can add value to investigations in invasion biology and conservation. A better understanding of the translocation history and resulting genetic mixing of host and parasite lineages in the native range can shed light on the genetic make‐up of parasite assemblages cointroduced to
