Effect of relative humidity on drying-induced damage in concrete: A comparative study of digital image correlation and lattice modelling

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2020
To assess the effect of relative humidity (RH) on drying-induced damage in concrete, the non-uniform strains and microcracks in concrete under different RH conditions were obtained using the digital image correlation (DIC) technique and lattice fracture ...

Tough and Rapidly Relaxing Hydrogels Via Programmable Crosslink Kinetics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A kinetic programming strategy encodes supramolecular crosslink lifetimes in single polymer networks via stoichiometric control of fast and slow hostguest interactions. This enables predictable stress relaxation on biologically relevant timescales (0.1‐100 s) while maintaining exceptional toughness (up to 14,500 J m−2), resolving the long‐standing ...

Hybrid Magnetoactive Soft Elastomers: Material Development Toward Application in Diaphragm Pumps

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Hybrid magnetoactive soft elastomeric membranes are developed by combining two different types of magnetic particles. The membranes exhibit distinct mechanical, magnetic and thermal properties owing to the unique characteristics of the two magnetic particles.

Monitoring of civil engineering structures using Digital Image Correlation technique

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2010
The Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique enables full field, noncontact measurements of displacements and strains of a wide variety of objects. An adaptation of the DIC technique for monitoring of civil-engineering structures is presented in the ...

Nanometric metrology by FIB-SEM-DIC measurements of strain field and fracture separation on composite metallic material

open access: yesMaterials & Design, 2020
Currently, kinematic field measurements for studying the mechanical behavior of materials and structures use common optical methods, such as mark tracking techniques, grid methods and correlation techniques. These techniques are employed over a region of

Elimination of Necking and Aspect Ratio Dependence in Uniaxial Actuators by Continuous Fiber Reinforcement

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A novel carbon fiber reinforcement for dielectric elastomer actuators enhances actuation force while decoupling electromechanical performance from the actuator's aspect ratio. Unlike conventional fiber reinforcements, it enables a uniform planar stretch state along the entire actuator.

On the Origins of Toughness in Corymbia calophylla (Marri Tree) Nuts

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We uncover the natural toughening mechanisms of the marri nut, including fiber pullout, crack deflection, and a viscoelastic matrix, which enable exceptional energy absorption and ductility comparable to Teflon, with an elastic modulus similar to acrylic.
