Abstract— Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a new modality for treatment of malignancy. In this paper, we reported the effect of UV activated dihematoporphyrin ether (DHE) on [3H] thymidine uptake and DNA synthesis in murine bladder tumor cells,MBT–2. Exponentially growing cells were pretreated with 0.05–5μg/ml of DHE for 30 min in complete darkness prior ...

AbstractThis study examined the safety and dose‐response relationships of 632‐nm laser irradiation of photosensitized normal coronary arteries in 27 dogs. Fifteen received 2.5 mg/kg dihematoporphyrin ether (DHE), seven received no sensitizer, and five had coronary instrumentation but no laser (sham laser procedures) at nine coronary sites—four ...

Dihematoporphyrin Ether Clearance in Primate Bladders
Journal of Urology, 1986The techniques of in vivo tissue fluorescence photometry and chemical extractions of DHE, which have been recently developed in our laboratory, were employed to study DHE uptake and clearance in the primate bladders. Data show these techniques are readily applicable in studying porphyrin uptake and clearance in primate bladders.

The binding of dihematoporphyrin ether (photofrin II) to human serum albumin
Clinica Chimica Acta, 1985The variable aggregation of porphyrins such as Hp and Hpd introduces uncertainties and errors into attempts to measure their binding to proteins. Methods such as dialysis, ultrafiltration and gel chromatography, so frequently used, proved to be unreliable when applied to the binding of Hp to serum albumin. Quenching of tryptophan fluorescence will only

Abstract Fluorescence spectroscopy was utilized to investigate the equilibrium interaction of dihem‐atoporphyrin ether(s) (DHE) with binary and ternary phospholipid mixtures of defined composition in order to define the roles of net negative surface charge and lateral phase separations in DHE‐membrane partitioning. Binary phospholipid mixtures employed

AbstractPhotodynamic therapy (PDT) is being evaluated in experimental clinical trials in patients with peritoneal malignancies. Some patients require partial small bowel resection with re‐anastomosis prior to PDT because of bulky tumor or focal involvement of the small bowel by tumor.

Results of dihematoporphyrin ether (DHE) uptake and fluorescence kinetics show that the concentration in the pancreas is on the order of 40-60 μg DHE/g of tissue at an injected dose of 40 mg/kg. Previously concentrations on this order have only been found in organs of the reticuloendothelial system.

Abstract The fluorescent molecule dihematoporphyrin ether (DHE), which is known to become sequestered in cells and which is currently being used for “photoradiation” cancer therapy in clinical trials, may organize into two-dimensional arrays at a water-membrane interface.

Hematoporphyrin derivative (HPD) and its newly purified form, dihematoporphyrin ether (DUE) have been shown to selectively localize in malignant tissues and virally induced papillomas (Sliikowitz et.al.). Its use as a probe to distinguish tumors from normal tissues has been largely based on its fluorescence when activated by ultraviolet light.

Photodynamic therapy involves the use of light of appropriate wavelength to excite a photosensitizer resulting in tissue destruction. The photosensitizer dihematoporphyrin ether is selectively retained in tumors allowing for tumor destruction while sparing normal structures.
