ENZYMATIC DECARBOXYLATION OF 2,6- AND 2,3-DIHYDROXYPHENYLALANINE

The action of dihydroxyphenylalanine (dopa) decarboxylase of guinea pig kidney and of tyrosine decarboxylase of Streptococcus faecalis R on 2,3- and 2,6-dopa has been studied. Compared with 3,4-dopa, these substrates are decarboxylated by the kidney enzyme at rates decreasing in the order: 2,3-, 3,4-, 2,6-dopa.

The action of L‐dihydroxyphenylalanine in patients receiving nialamide

Nialamide produces effective monamine oxidase inhibition resulting in a three‐ to fivefold increase in tryptamine excretion when administered in a dose of 100 mg. for 10 days. L‐Dihydroxyphenylalanine, given in a dose of 75 to 100 mg. to normal volunteers receiving nialamide in a dose of 100 mg.

Stability of collagen in the presence of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA)

Many cross-linking agents for collagen are available with varying levels of toxicity and some are in use in biomedical implants of collagen. L-DOPA (3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine), a neurotransmitter, is a naturally present compound in the living system and is the target in therapeutic strategy of Parkinson's disease.

ADMINISTRATION OF DIHYDROXYPHENYLALANINE TO PARKINSONIAN PATIENTS.

Dihydroxyphenylalanine (dopa), the metabolic precursor of dopamine, was administered to 10 parkinsonian patients in oral doses of 1-5 g. and intravenous doses of 0.2-0.5 g. Increases in dopamine excretion of 100- to 1000-fold following the dopa administration indicated that dopa was being absorbed and metabolized. Only two of the 10 patients showed any
