Direct Volume Rendering in Virtual Reality

2018
Direct Volume Rendering (DVR) techniques are used to visualize surfaces from 3D volume data sets, without computing a 3D geometry. Several surfaces can be classified using a transfer function by assigning optical properties like color and opacity (RGBα) to the voxel data.

Optical models for direct volume rendering

IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, 1995
This tutorial survey paper reviews several different models for light interaction with volume densities of absorbing, glowing, reflecting, and/or scattering material. They are, in order of increasing realism, absorption only, emission only, emission and absorption combined, single scattering of external illumination without shadows, single scattering ...

Composed scattering model for direct volume rendering

Journal of Computer Science and Technology, 1996
Based on the equation of transfer in transport theory of optical physics, a new volume rendering model, called composed scattering model (CSM), is presented. In calculating the scattering term of the equation, it is decomposed into volume scattering intensity and surface scattering intensity, and they are composed with the boundary detection operator ...

Direct Volume Rendering of Irregular Samples

1995
Visualization of concentrations and density values is one of the main tasks of volume rendering systems. Whenever the sample points are not located on any kind of structured grid most visualization tools are not able to display the data without expensive resampling.

A polygonal approximation to direct scalar volume rendering

Proceedings of the 1990 workshop on Volume visualization, 1990
One method of directly rendering a three-dimensional volume of scalar data is to project each cell in a volume onto the screen. Rasterizing a volume cell is more complex than rasterizing a polygon. A method is presented that approximates tetrahedral volume cells with hardware renderable transparent triangles.

Evaluation of a real-time direct volume rendering system

Computers & Graphics, 1997
Abstract The results of evaluating VIRIM, that can be considered as the first real-time direct volume rendering system for ray-casting and volume ray-tracing, is described in this paper. Emphasis is laid on experiences concerning the hardware architecture used with respect to the anticipated application area in medicine.

Texture-based Transfer Functions for Direct Volume Rendering

IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, 2008
Visualization of volumetric data faces the difficult task of finding effective parameters for the transfer functions. Those parameters can determine the effectiveness and accuracy of the visualization. Frequently, volumetric data includes multiple structures and features that need to be differentiated. However, if those features have the same intensity

FAVR - Accelerating Direct Volume Rendering for Virtual RealitySystems

2020 IEEE Visualization Conference (VIS), 2020
In recent years, virtual reality (VR) has become readily available using robust and affordable head-mounted display (HMD) systems. Several VR-based scientific visualization solutions were proposed recently, but direct volume rendering (DVR) was considered only in a handful of VR-applications.

Fusing Features in Direct Volume Rendered Images

2006
In this paper, we propose a novel framework which can fuse multiple user selected features in different direct volume rendered images into a comprehensive image according to users’ preference. The framework relies on three techniques, i.e., user voting, genetic algorithm, and image similarity.

Direct Volume Rendering of Volumetric Protein Data

2006
The visualization of 3D volume data of proteins synthesized by quantum mechanics is a new topic and is of great importance in modern bio-computing. In this paper, we introduce our primary attempts on the volume visualization of the 3D macro-molecular scalar field.
