Calprotectin and lactoferrin faecal levels in patients with Clostridium difficile infection (CDI): a prospective cohort study. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Measurement of both calprotectin and lactoferrin in faeces has successfully been used to discriminate between functional and inflammatory bowel conditions, but evidence is limited for Clostridium difficile infection (CDI).

Design and analysis strategies for robust microbiome ageing research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The gut microbiome changes with age and associates with age‐related morbidity and mortality, establishing it as a potential biomarker and intervention target for ageing. Realising this potential requires methodological rigour, yet distinguishing biological signals from methodological artefacts remains challenging across cohorts. This review provides an

Rheumatoid Arthritis Disease Activity Index-5: an easy and effective way of monitoring patients with rheumatoid arthritis

open access: yesEgyptian Rheumatology and Rehabilitation, 2019
Objective To study the utility of the Rheumatoid Arthritis Disease Activity Index-5 (RADAI-5) as a valid tool for daily rheumatoid arthritis (RA) monitoring and to compare its predictability to assess RA activity with respect to Disease Activity Score 28

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.

Validating 10-joint juvenile arthritis disease activity score cut-offs for disease activity levels in non-systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis

open access: yesRMD Open, 2019
Objectives To validate cut-offs of the Juvenile Arthritis Disease Activity Score 10 (JADAS10) and clinical JADAS10 (cJADAS10) and to compare them with other patient cohorts. Methods In a national multicentre study, cross-sectional data on recent visits of

The new Global Multiple Sclerosis Severity Score (MSSS) correlates with axonal but not glial biomarkers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
This study investigated whether the new Global Multiple Sclerosis Severity Scale (MSSS) correlated with cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers for axonal and glial pathology.

Estimated cutoff points for the 28-joint disease activity score based on C-reactive protein in a longitudinal register of early arthritis.

open access: yes, 2010
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the cutoff points for the 28-joint Disease Activity Score (DAS28) calculated using C-reactive protein (CRP) measurements from patients with early arthritis. METHODS: We analyzed data from 568 visits of 207 patients enrolled in our

An epithelial GPR35 isoform supports tumor‐associated transcriptional and metabolic phenotypes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
GPR35 generates two functionally distinct isoforms with previously unresolved roles. GPR35‐short mediates immune‐cell chemotaxis, while GPR35‐long is enriched in colorectal cancer epithelium, where it supports increased metabolism, proliferation, and tumor‐associated transcriptional programs.

The activity of amyloid beta binding alcohol dehydrogenase in Alzheimer's disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The mitochondria are a vibrant hub for many problems that occur in Alzheimer’s disease. The enzyme amyloid-ß binding alcohol dehydrogenase (ABAD) and Cyclophilin D (CypD) are two key mitochondrial proteins that have essential functions in Alzheimer’s ...
