Optimal Timing Regularly Outperforms Higher Coverage in Preventative Measles Supplementary Immunization Campaigns

open access: yesVaccines
Measles threatens the lives and livelihoods of tens of millions of children and there are countries where routine immunization systems miss enough individuals to create the risk of large outbreaks.

Perspective on nanochannels as cellular mediators in different disease conditions

open access: yesCell Communication and Signaling, 2018
Tunnelling nanotubes (TNTs), also known as membrane nanochannels, are actin-based structures that facilitate cytoplasmic connections for rapid intercellular transfer of signals, organelles and membrane components.

Shared Care Contributions to Self-Care and Quality of Life in Chronic Cardiac Patients [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Shared care is an interpersonal interaction system composed of communication, decision making, and reciprocity; it is used by patients and family caregivers (care dyads) to exchange social support.

Enteropathogenic E. coli shows delayed attachment and host response in human jejunum organoid‐derived monolayers compared to HeLa cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Tocotrienol is a cardioprotective agent against ageing-associated cardiovascular disease and its associated morbidities

open access: yesNutrition & Metabolism, 2018
Ageing is a nonmodifiable risk factor that is linked to increased likelihood of cardiovascular morbidities. Whilst many pharmacological interventions currently exist to treat many of these disorders such as statins for hypercholesterolemia or beta ...

Organoids in pediatric cancer research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Organoid technology has revolutionized cancer research, yet its application in pediatric oncology remains limited. Recent advances have enabled the development of pediatric tumor organoids, offering new insights into disease biology, treatment response, and interactions with the tumor microenvironment.

Generation of an induced pluripotent stem cell line (CSC-32) from a patient with Parkinson's disease carrying a heterozygous variation p.A53T in the SNCA gene

open access: yesStem Cell Research, 2020
Here, we describe the generation of an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line, from a male patient diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PD). The patient carries a heterozygous variation p.A53T in the SNCA gene.

Effects of Contact Network Models on Stochastic Epidemic Simulations

open access: yes, 2017
The importance of modeling the spread of epidemics through a population has led to the development of mathematical models for infectious disease propagation.

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Economic Modeling of Livestock Disease Outbreaks [PDF]

open access: yes
The paper surveys articles examining the economic impacts of a livestock disease outbreak and focuses on modeling issues. One set of papers considers setting an import barrier when there is a livestock disease risk.
