Age‐related decline of presumptive inhibitory synapses in the sensorimotor cortex as revealed by the physical disector

Journal of Comparative Neurology, 2001
AbstractThe synapse, as the site of functional neural interaction, has been suggested as a possible substrate for age‐related impairment of cognitive ability. Using the physical disector probe with tissue prepared for ultrastructural analysis, we find an age‐related decline in the numerical density of presumptive inhibitory synapses in layer 2 of the ...

Particle-number estimation with special emphasis on the disector and fractionator

Proceedings, annual meeting, Electron Microscopy Society of America, 1993
This abstract deals with how to stereologically estimate the number of particles in sections without making any assumptions about the size or shape of the particles. The usual term for this kind of particle estimation is design-based because by designing the study adequately any size or shape-assumptions are avoided in contrast to the obsolete model ...

Application of the Disector to Determine the Distribution of True Interlamellar Spacing in Lamellar Microstructures

Practical Metallography, 2010
Abstract It is well known that the interlamellar spacing controls the mechanical properties of any material with a lamellar microstructure. It is also expected, although not yet established, that varying distribution of interlamellar spacing would also influence the properties.

The number and size of rat tubular cells in diabetic growth, regression, and regrowth using the optical disector

Proceedings, annual meeting, Electron Microscopy Society of America, 1993
Diabetic renal growth, regression and regrowth was studied using stereological methods on perfusion-fixed rat kidneys. A razor blade tissue slicer was used for cutting the entire kidney into 2-mm-thick slices and every second slice was sampled systematically random.

Physical and optical disectors

In morphometric studies, two-dimensional histological sections are evaluated using designbased stereological methods in order to obtain three-dimensional structural information about the tissue. The stereology is a combination of geometric measurements and statistical sampling principles.

Estimation Of Pore Size In Aluminium Using The Disector, The Selector And Cavalieri's Principle

1991
Recent stereological methods are available for estimating the number and size of arbitrary particles or voids in a material very efficiently and in an unbiased manner, with the only assumption that particles must be identifiable on serial sections or confocal planes.

Estimating Cell Number in the Central Nervous System by Stereological Methods: The Optical Disector and Fractionator

Current Protocols in Toxicology, 2000
AbstractThis unit describes techniques, based on recent advances in stereological methods, to obtain unbiased estimates of total cell or synapse number in discrete structures of the central nervous system. They combine unbiased counting frames, unbiased systematic random sampling, and unbiased estimates of the structure volume to produce the final ...
