Experimental colonization of Ulva spp. with algal-epiphytic antagonistic bacteria as a strategy for pathogen control in integrated multi-trophic aquaculture recirculating systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Probiotics are a potential tool for bacterial control in aquaculture (Pintado et al. 2011), decreasing the use of disinfectants and antibiotics and contributing to an ecosystem approach, which is more sustainable and respectful to the environment ...

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Exposure to Low Doses of Biocides Increases Resistance to Other Biocides and to Antibiotics in Strains of Listeria monocytogenes

open access: yesBiology
The effect of sub-inhibitory doses of three disinfectants, sodium hypochlorite (SHY), peracetic acid (PAA), and benzalkonium chloride (BZK), on the resistance to biocides and antibiotics of five strains of Listeria monocytogenes was determined.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Prevalence, Molecular Identification, Antimicrobial Resistance, and Disinfectant Susceptibility of Listeria innocua Isolated from Ready-to-Eat Foods Sold in Johannesburg, South Africa

open access: yesJournal of Food Quality and Hazards Control, 2021
Background: Food contamination with Listeria spp. can occur at all stages of the food chain. The aim of this research was to investigate the prevalence, molecular identification, antimicrobial resistance, and disinfectant susceptibility of Listeria ...

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Comparing Disinfection Options for Drinking Water Treatment [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Drinking water treatment is essential to obtain a healthy source of water that can be distributed throughout a community. There are various methods to disinfect water, and all have trade-offs regarding public health and the environment.

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Antifungal Effect of Silver Nitrate on Prosthodontic Dentures

open access: yesBalkan Journal of Dental Medicine, 2020
Background/Aim: Although there are studies about the antimicrobial activity of silver, there is no study evaluating it as a denture disinfectant. The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of 6 disinfectant solutions (50% vinegar, 100 ...
