Parallel and Distributed Computing. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1986
Abstract : A workshop on the complexity of parallel and distributed computation in May 1986. It has 21 speakers and 141 participants; their interests ranged from practical questions about the architecture of parallel and distributed systems to highly theoretical questions about the complexity of parallel computation.

Integrative systems‐level analysis reveals a contextual crosstalk between hypoxia and global metabolism in human breast tumors

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Breast tumor samples scored for metabolic deregulation (M1 to M3) were given a hypoxia score (HS). The highest HS occurred in patients with strongest metabolic deregulation (M3), supporting tumor aggressiveness. HS correlated with the highest number of metabolic pathways in M1. This suggests hypoxia to be an early event in metabolic deregulation.

An Algorithm for Computing the Distribution Function of the Generalized Poisson-Binomial Distribution [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
The Poisson-binomial distribution is useful in many applied problems in engineering, actuarial science, and data mining. The Poisson-binomial distribution models the distribution of the sum of independent but not identically distributed Bernoulli random variables whose success probabilities vary.

Addressing persistent challenges in digital image analysis of cancer tissue: resources developed from a hackathon

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Large multidimensional digital images of cancer tissue are becoming prolific, but many challenges exist to automatically extract relevant information from them using computational tools. We describe publicly available resources that have been developed jointly by expert and non‐expert computational biologists working together during a virtual hackathon

Rates of convergence towards the Fréchet distribution [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2013
We develop Stein's method for the Fr\'echet distribution and apply it to compute rates of convergence in distribution of renormalized sample maxima to the Fr\'echet distribution.

A collaborative citizen science platform for real-time volunteer computing and games

open access: yes, 2017
Volunteer computing (VC) or distributed computing projects are common in the citizen cyberscience (CCS) community and present extensive opportunities for scientists to make use of computing power donated by volunteers to undertake large-scale scientific ...

Targeted metabolomics reveals novel diagnostic biomarkers for colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study employed targeted metabolomic profiling to identify 302 distinct metabolites present in platelet‐rich plasma (PRP), revealing aberrant metabolic profiles amongst individuals diagnosed with colorectal cancer (CRC). Compared to carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and cancer antigen 19‐9 (CA199), our metabolite panel showed improved sensitivity ...

Detecting and Tracing i.i.d. Attacks in Networks With Any Number of Relays

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2016
This paper investigates the detection and tracing problems in a multi-relay network, where a source wants to exchange the information with a destination through multiple potential malicious relay nodes.
