Bacterial Diterpene Biosynthesis
Angewandte Chemie International Edition, 2019AbstractThis Minireview summarises recent developments in the biosynthesis of diterpenes by diterpene synthases in bacteria. It is structured by the class of enzyme involved in the first committed step towards diterpenes, starting with type I diterpene synthases, followed by type II enzymes and the more recently discovered UbiA‐related diterpene ...

Mechanistic Characterization of Diterpene Synthase Pairs for Tricyclic Diterpenes from Cyanobacteria
Journal of the American Chemical SocietyIn recent years, genome mining in cyanobacteria has revealed abundant gene clusters related to natural product biosynthesis. However, only a few terpene synthases (TSs) have been identified from this bacterial phylum. Pfam profiles, such as PF03936 and PF19086, which are frequently used for TS retrieval, are built from plant, bacterial, and fungal TSs.

The study of terpenes is intimately connected with the development of organic chemistry. In the early years of terpene research the peculiar structures of this type of compounds posed formidable problems for which methods of attack had to be invented; and the organic chemist of today owes a great deal to the pioneers in this field such as Wallach ...

At least 2500 diterpenes are found in a large number of plant families (Banthorpe and Charlwood, 1980; Croteau and Johnson, 1981; Devon and Scott, 1972; Gershenzon and Croteau, 1991; Hanson, 1991). Most of these compounds fit into about 20 major groups (Fig. 22.1).
