Acute effect of prednisolone on renal handling of sodium. [PDF]
The effect of prednisolone on renal handling of sodium (Na) was studied in rats under three experimental conditions: 1) hydropenia, 2) water diuresis, and 3) distal tubular blockade (DTB).

Medical treatment of ascites in cirrhosis [PDF]
Medical treatment of cirrhotic ascites is essentially supportive, dictated by the patient's discomfort, impaired cardiovascular or respiratory function and potential for infection. Treatment of ‘simple’ ascites (moderate fluid accumulation, serum albumin

Why do SGLT2 inhibitors reduce heart failure hospitalization? A differential volume regulation hypothesis [PDF]
The effect of a sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i) in reducing heart failure hospitalization in the EMPA-REG OUTCOMES trial has raised the possibility of using these agents to treat established heart failure.

A novel time series analysis approach for prediction of dialysis in critically ill patients using echo-state networks [PDF]
Background: Echo-state networks (ESN) are part of a group of reservoir computing methods and are basically a form of recurrent artificial neural networks (ANN). These methods can perform classification tasks on time series data.

secCl is a cys-loop ion channel necessary for the chloride conductance that mediates hormone-induced fluid secretion in Drosophila [PDF]
Organisms use circulating diuretic hormones to control water balance (osmolarity), thereby avoiding dehydration and managing excretion of waste products.

Mannitol might inhibit paracellular reabsorption of water and sodium chloride in the proximal tubules by reducing the osmotic driving force. We examined this hypothesis in anesthetized dogs. Bicarbonate reabsorption was kept constant by sodium bicarbonate infusion, and transcellular sodium chloride reabsorption was inhibited by ethacrynic acid.

Atrial natriuretic factor [PDF]
The discovery of the first well-defined natriuretic hormone, the Atrial Natriuretic Factor (ANF), has prompted research on its impact on volume regulation in health and disease.

Diuretics and relief of congestion remain the mainstay of therapy in patients hospitalized with heart failure (HF), regardless of ejection fraction. However, limited data and established practice guidelines are available to guide clinicians in the duration and intensity of inpatient diuresis.

Advantages of the new loop diuretic torasemide over furosemide in patients with cirrhosis and ascites [PDF]
Torasemide is a new loop diuretic with a longer half-life and longer action than furosemide in healthy subjects. In order to evaluate the pharmacodynamic effects, single oral doses of furosemide (80 mg) and torasemide (20 mg), which were equipotent in ...
