Riparian reforestation on the landscape scale: Navigating trade‐offs among agricultural production, ecosystem functioning and biodiversity

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 59, Issue 6, Page 1456-1471, June 2022., 2022
This study demonstrates, for the first time, the potential of landscape optimization algorithms to support the management and design of multifunctional stream–riparian networks. We identified riparian reforestation solutions that minimized trade‐offs between specific natural values and societal needs.

Sweep netting samples, but not sticky trap samples, indicate beneficial arthropod abundance is negatively associated with landscape wide insecticide use

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 59, Issue 4, Page 942-952, April 2022., 2022
Insecticide impacts on arthropod populations extend beyond the fields in which they are used. Awareness of the potential landscape‐wide effects of pesticides, either through drift of pesticides or insect movement, may encourage land managers to adopt practices to reduce insecticide drift and the frequency of insecticide applications, thereby reducing ...

Experimental evidence of rapid heritable adaptation in the absence of initial standing genetic variation

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 36, Issue 1, Page 226-238, January 2022., 2022
A free Plain Language Summary can be found within the Supporting Information of this article. Abstract The success of genetically depauperate populations in the face of environmental change is contrary to the expectation that high genetic diversity is required for rapid adaptation.

Towards Categorical Visibility? The Political Making of a Third Sex in Germany and the Netherlands

open access: yesJCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies, Volume 59, Issue 4, Page 981-1024, July 2021., 2021

Phenotypic correlates between clock genes and phenology among populations of Diederik cuckoo, Chrysococcyx caprius. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
The Diederik cuckoo is a small Afrotropical bird in the Cuculidae family that has a wide geographic distribution in sub‐Saharan Africa. A study on 30 Diederik cuckoos revealed genetic diversity in Clock and Adcyap1 circadian clock genes, with distinct North–South variations in allele lengths.

Selection of indicators for assessing and managing the impacts of bottom trawling on seabed habitats

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 57, Issue 7, Page 1199-1209, July 2020., 2020
An evaluation of each candidate indicator against a commonly agreed suite of desirable properties coupled with the outputs of our meta‐analysis showed that whole‐community numbers of individuals and biomass are the most suitable indicators of bottom trawling impacts as they performed well on all criteria.
