Establishment of a coculture system for Porphyromonas gingivalis and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma using spheroid culture and LATS inhibition

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We established a spheroid coculture system enabling viable Porphyromonas gingivalis–HNSCC interactions under normoxic conditions. Inhibition of LATS1/2 maintains tumor cells in an undifferentiated state, which may promote spheroid growth and create a more permissive environment for bacterial persistence.

Improved single-swab sample preparation for recovering bacterial and phage DNA from human skin and wound microbiomes. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
BackgroundCharacterization of the skin and wound microbiome is of high biomedical interest, but is hampered by the low biomass of typical samples. While sample preparation from other microbiomes (e.g., gut) has been the subject of extensive optimization,

DNA adenine methylation and bacterial pathogenesis

open access: yesInternational Journal of Medical Microbiology, 2007
Methylation of DNA by the DNA adenine methyltransferase (Dam) provides an epigenetic signal that influences and regulates numerous physiological processes in the bacterial cell including chromosome replication, mismatch repair, transposition, and transcription.

Antibiofilm activity of a chionodracine‐derived peptide by NMR‐based metabolomics of cell‐free supernatant of Acinetobacter baumannii clinical strains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
KHS‐Cnd peptide is able to impair biofilm formation and disaggregate mature biofilms in Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates. Differences in extracellular metabolites reflect changes in biofilm metabolism due to KHS‐Cnd treatment. Among the differentially represented extracellular metabolites upon KHS‐Cnd treatment, the significantly altered ...

ATP13A2 is involved in intracellular polyamine transport in lung epithelial cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Spermidine transport in lung epithelial cells involves the polyamine transporter ATP13A2. Cell proliferation is associated with the upregulation of ATP13A2. Polyamines are present in all living cells and are implicated in various crucial cellular processes such as proliferation, apoptosis and autophagy.

Microbial diversity in Baltic Sea sediments [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
This thesis focuses on microbial community structures and their functions in Baltic Sea sediments. First we investigated the distribution of archaea and bacteria in Baltic Sea sediments along a eutrophication gradient.

Bacterial DNA patterns identified using paired-end Illumina sequencing of 16S rRNA genes from whole blood samples of septic patients in the emergency room and intensive care unit

open access: yesBMC Microbiology, 2018
Background Sepsis refers to clinical presentations ranging from mild body dysfunction to multiple organ failure. These clinical symptoms result from a systemic inflammatory response to pathogenic or potentially pathogenic microorganisms present ...

Mycobacterial cell division arrest and smooth‐to‐rough envelope transition using CRISPRi‐mediated genetic repression systems

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing and phenotypic exploration in nontuberculous mycobacteria. In this Research Protocol, we describe approaches to control, monitor, and quantitatively assess CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing in M. smegmatis and M. abscessus model organisms.

Methods of isolation and identification of pathogenic and potential pathogenic bacteria from skins and tannery effluents [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Currently there is no standard protocol available within the leather industry to isolate and identify pathogenic bacteria from hides, skins or tannery effluent.

Isolating Bacterial DNA from Goat Milk and Its Products: Comparative Analysis

open access: yesТехника и технология пищевых производств
Despite its high demand in molecular diagnostics, the bacterial DNA extraction from dairy products remains an understudied area. The effectiveness of different DNA extraction methods for detecting microorganisms in food matrices needs a comprehensive ...
